Old picture, 84 colors. Pixelled in Deluxe Paint on Amiga in about one month. Note to all "strange artists": each pixel, each AA, and all ditherings were created BY MY HAND. greetz,

I'd say he used a 3d render as a reference for lighting and shading to get it just right and then pixeled it, it is PA you can see in the dithering, he just used alot of inbetween colours

balls01 (Level 2 Quiet One) at 5/14/2008 4:43:54 AM
crazeeee this piece is just amazing i hope i get that good

japez (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/13/2008 12:27:10 AM
Wow, kinda suprising how well everything blends in.

Bloo (Level 3 Stalker) at 4/21/2008 12:24:15 AM
Warwolt, I know it's not obvious for this to be PA when zoomed out, but try zooming in and you'll see some extreme AA and good dithering. That's the reason why this looks so realistic. There's also no other program you can use to dither, because dither can only be created using the pencil tool. It's impossible to dither using the brush tool judging by its round shape.

Anyway, I think this piece is great, love the palette, and your style is amazing.

Warwolt (Level 1 Thug) at 3/21/2008 12:44:30 AM
No, pixelart is stuff you do limited to paint. Its a bit like saying "If I take a photo of a mountain and put a layer on photoshop is it a painting then?"

Warwolt (Level 1 Thug) at 3/20/2008 3:44:56 PM
I will never ever belive you if you say you made that by hand, thats just BS.

Pandora (Level 2 Corporal) at 3/9/2008 11:22:16 PM
Not sure what it is, but I love it! haha.

Boonzeet (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/8/2008 7:40:26 AM
Wow. Honestly that has made me rethink quitting pixel art.
Either you are really really really skilled. Or you used an auto ditherer.

Plus where is this auto ditherer in paint?

DJ gman (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 1/2/2008 6:38:10 PM
it is so smooooooooth :O

sputnik (Level 3 Sergeant) at 11/25/2007 5:29:06 PM

For the sake of authenticity, if you ever attempt another piece of this magnitude you should include an in-depth WIP. Regardless of this being hand-pixeled or not, it is a fantastic piece of art.

DelphinusMach1 (Level 1 Intern) at 10/21/2007 6:01:57 AM
I'd worship myself if I could pixel that well. However, I can't, so I'll have to worship this picture instead.

Circa (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/4/2007 12:51:50 PM
It's so good that it doesn't even look like pixels. :D

Thumtac (Level 1 Private) at 10/1/2007 7:42:04 PM
I love it!!!

LdnCarBoy (Level 1 Private) at 9/21/2007 12:52:46 PM
This is amazing the detail is so cool

Plutogeezer (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/31/2007 3:19:17 AM
Wow! Really! Wow!

breathingsand (Level 3 Enforcer) at 8/6/2007 12:13:50 PM
if you did that by hand, then I'm mickey mouse, or really impressed

jh-pixelzzz (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/19/2007 9:40:38 AM
awesome shading!!!

rabidbaboy (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 6/28/2007 9:23:44 PM
I'd just like to point out that even MSPaint has auto dither, if you know where to look.

On the piece itself, imo, if it can't be done in MSPaint, then it's not pure pixelart.

A WIP animation would help in these cases, of course.

WaterCloset (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/26/2007 6:54:30 PM
If you make something in photoshop and then go through in a pixel program and touch it up, is it still pixelart?

MediYama (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/11/2007 7:57:36 AM
Whoa.. you hand-made all pixels..

Inferno.Fighter.IV (Level 1 Intern) at 6/8/2007 11:34:03 PM
Wow... All I can say is wow...

cerealkiller54 (Level 6 Yonkyu) at 5/8/2007 7:56:43 AM
Simply Awesome. This must have taken a long time!

madartiststan (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/3/2007 4:33:32 PM
Wow, that's quite amazing man. :)

Guts (Level 2 Corporal) at 4/16/2007 1:41:02 AM
Can we really name this pixel art ? btw, impressive

vorofikin (Level 1 Depressed) at 4/10/2007 4:23:26 AM

me either but I think I have to.

Bogdxnuuu (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/7/2007 3:17:05 PM

I don't want to belive that it was made pixel by pixel!

Way to realistic... keep up the good work! 5/5.

Rappybas (Level 1 Rookie) at 3/14/2007 12:57:10 PM
Abstract and it has something special... :D

Imp (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/12/2007 2:12:18 PM
the dithering is one step from unreality

Ghastly (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/1/2007 2:35:47 PM
This is absolutely AMAZING!
It would have taken me much more than a month to make that... If I would be capable of doing that...

khorin (Level 1 Private) at 2/1/2007 1:18:17 PM
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but this piece looks so much like grafiti. Awesome!

Zhou (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/18/2007 6:14:16 PM
It is absolutely insane pixel art.

TillimannBanana (Level 2 Corporal) at 1/9/2007 5:56:16 PM
by the way... what did you expect? you used that much colors and such a perfect aa that it is difficult to believe... i cant understand your reaction. if you made it by hand: enjoy the others who aren't able to draw such pics!

TillimannBanana (Level 2 Corporal) at 1/9/2007 5:51:38 PM
I give you 5 points although I can't believe that this is pixelart but I will not make you guilty until proofen innocent so: Very Good Work!!!!!

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 12/18/2006 6:11:59 PM
whoa  totally  awesome!

tacky (Level 1 Rookie) at 12/10/2006 2:41:52 PM
wat the shit! im crap compared to your artwork!!

eckered (Level 3 Stalker) at 10/29/2006 7:14:01 PM

im really just not sure.  the dithering that i am sure he did do is top notch, but zoom in on the blue tenticle thing...  to me it looks rather.... smudged.... i happen to have a pretty extencive knowledge of photoshop, and i am pretty sure i know what im talkinga bout when i say it looks smudged...  another part i noticed was the dark orange part in between the tenticle and the nose thing.  looks rather like a gradient with some soft brush smudging.  again, not trying to call you a liar, or to even accuse you of photoshoping.  but as you have seen here, if you make something this good,  you are going to get a ton of crap from wanabees...

to me, its not really about wether you made it pixel by pixel, more about how it looks on a whole.  it really looks that much beter with some photoshoping, by all means photoshop, but dont lie about it.  (not trying to accuse you)

Jetstar (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/23/2006 4:19:08 PM
Very smooth style. Love how everything seems to melt together.

I Am Uh (Level 2 Dealer) at 10/2/2006 2:05:38 PM
Once again.... This is pixel art....? Bows to the overlord..

Dysposin (Level 1 Depressed) at 9/4/2006 11:58:12 AM
That's... sweet. I love it. And Amiga... :3 Love old-skool stuff. I can't really see anything weong with this piece of art. I can only hope that I could have skills like this some day. 5/5 and fav.

NobleClock (Level 2 Corporal) at 7/14/2006 11:09:09 PM

also, this looks more or less like it has trace bitmapped to make it looks pixelated on flash. :?

MichaS (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 7/6/2006 11:21:13 AM
You are genius

NobleClock (Level 2 Corporal) at 7/2/2006 12:19:24 AM
the trouble with finding the best thing to work on is that most files (photshop included) vectorize the lines. But i think for the sake of a challenge it would have been better for you to work in Microsoft Paint.

Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/26/2006 2:39:28 PM
Regardless as to whether or not it's hand pixelled, which I believe it's not, I don't like it. Considering the number of colors and the static-ish dither patterns on the blue guy, it would have looked better at a large resolution in a photoshop style piece. It lacks the clarity I that enjoy in pixel art.

ZoSo (Level 3 Chief) at 6/24/2006 5:23:37 AM
Thats one hell of a good piece of anti aliasing. Colours are amazing to.. Very very nice work.

radio_active (Level 2 Corporal) at 6/17/2006 4:18:35 PM
seeing art like this just reminds me of how much I suk  LIKE HOLLY CRAP! must of taken forever!

Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/26/2006 3:34:01 AM
How bizarre! That's a great piece. One would hardly not believe it was pixelart! Reflections are superb IMO.

DainBramaged (Level 1 Quiet One) at 5/22/2006 12:14:59 PM

Domarius - Agreed in some of your postures... It isn't made in paint MS, but it's great anyway... It would be more great if you merely did make it in paint... Then it would also be a bigger challenge for you ^.^

DainBrrramaged.

Transformer Guy (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/18/2006 8:10:00 PM
... This is amazing. JUST. FREAKING. AMAZING. You must not have slept for a month, huh? You must be a pixeling god (or goddess). 5/5 and fav. This is possibly my favorite work on this site. Keep up the above-perfect work.

Domarius (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/9/2006 6:20:41 AM
It doesn't matter if it really was done by hand 100% - as far as I can see (afer zooming in) this could easily have been created by painting it and then sampling it down, or just using photoshop style brushes at this resolution.  And then dropping the colour range to get the dithering in photoshop.

Personally, I consider "real" pixel art to be something that is too sharp and refined to have been done using what I described above.  I mean, otherwise there's no point.

What's the point in replicating what PS will do for you already?  In my mind, Pixel art is what you can do by manually placing pixels to get the look you can't already get with photoshop.  And if you want to do dithering or anti-aliasing, if you're doing it by hand then you can make it very controlled and fine - dither in the appropriate direction of the shape of the object, only antialias exactly where its needed, etc.

I just don't see that in this pic.  Like I said, if it really was done pixel by pixel, it was waste of time.

(Yeah I'm new and haven't uploaded anything yet... it's coming.)

Dio Weaver (Level 1 White Belt) at 4/7/2006 11:14:57 AM

That is just amazing...

not sure what the hell its supposed to be...

but its damn well done...

Agaki (Level 2 Mercenary) at 3/25/2006 3:34:26 AM
Too great for words.

Grix (Level 1 Seaman) at 3/6/2006 11:41:18 AM
Wow. How do you make that kind of invisible dithering?! It's incredible!

7mm (Level 1 Rookie) at 3/5/2006 9:55:00 AM
This is fantastic...

WOW

Ghost (Level 1 Seaman) at 2/16/2006 5:52:52 PM

I hate you demoscene people :(

lol, nice job, wether or not it is all 100% hand pixeled (which i believe it is) it is still a nice piece of work :)

Blood Stained Hurricane (Level 1 Thug) at 12/10/2005 8:02:43 PM
OMG this is fu*king briliant and it is clearly pixleled to all you nay-sayers out there.

aurelis_complex (Level 1 Hired Gun) at 11/3/2005 9:17:31 AM
insanely detailed...my head spins with the granduer. awe inspiring my friend. the coloring is so detailed and precise. i almost didnt think it was really pixelled but some digital art made on ps or psp.

Helix (Level 1 Rookie) at 11/3/2005 8:51:24 AM
O_O

The clouring is amazing. Just pure amazing work. It must have taken you ages but all the hardwork has really paid off! Excellent work Slay!

EdanadE (Level 1 Rookie) at 10/10/2005 8:40:19 PM
i dunno, i don't think this is a pixel art at all.. hmm, though the piece itself looks really cool altogether, it's just that, we're talking pixels here peeps.. anyone who uses photoshop, or anyone who studies computer & software for that matter, knows how simple images can get "pixelated" once it is saved in either .png or .gif formats.

because pixel is the basic unit in any computer-generated images, it is just normal that we see "pixels" when zooming-in images, ESPECIALLY if it's in .gif/.png formats..

ah, oh well, i guess this is a far-off topic already. ahehehe.. but don't get me wrong, this is a cool piece. it would do better in deviant art if you ask me.

Indigo (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 10/3/2005 11:00:10 PM

I've talked with St0ven for a very long time about Slay's pieces a long time ago - and downloaded deluxepaint to test my theories....and it in fact is true.  there are auto dither tools even... I didn't want to cause a big ruckus about this, but i'm glad more expirienced artists have.

to all you who say its hand pixeled:
just because you can see distinct dither patterns does not mean it was done by hand.  there are many programs out there that use a pre-defined pallete to create dithering for you.  Neota gave some examples of these programs.  If you dont believe me, research into these programs youself because you only making yourselves sound worse supporting this.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/15/2005 4:22:58 PM
Btw the Helm below is me. I stand by my comments, and they've nothing to do with jealousy or spite.

neota (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 9/7/2005 10:10:38 AM
What is funny about you naive guys is, you probably haven't even used a paintprogram that has hotkeys for next/prev color( deluxepaint, grafx2, brilliance..). Just that by itself can boost your working speed  1000%, and make antialiasing incredibly easy and quick to do.
It probably is amazing to you, to be fair.. I would just like guys like slay to put it into context if possible: He drew this with tools that are a few orders of magnitude better than the ones you're likely using.

I also agree with Helm and ptoing, this is not so good as most posters here are making it out to be. go to http://www.gfxzone.org and browse through the 8bit galleries to find some pictures that can be compared on equal ground with this one. Or just think, 'if this was a CG, would I like it, as a picture?'

OTOH, I do want to encourage people to draw demoscene style pics, I like the style and i like perfectionism. So it's great that slay submitted this if it's going to prompt more demoscene style pics.

Is it going to?

Aiko (Level 1 Quiet One) at 9/3/2005 8:20:23 AM
 oh my god.....

it's amazing! i had to zoom in to see it for myself. and when i saw it, my jaw dropped! you have amazing talent, and i have to say that it rocks. just wow....

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/24/2005 2:22:22 PM
I can't see any reason why this should not be a pixelart. Perfectly antialiased, thats all. Including the brilliant shading. PERFECT.

All pixels are not some 8 color junk, I was on that opinion until I got brainwashed on the forums by main pixelscene, and now I am tring to work it back as it was before...

cryofecstasy (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/22/2005 4:56:17 PM
That doesnt even LOOK like pixelation. My god.

islandhopper910 (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/21/2005 5:14:48 PM
wow.

Blick (Level 6 Commander) at 8/20/2005 1:25:06 PM
You guys are so naive that it's making me get lightheaded.

Kirra (Level 1 White Belt) at 8/15/2005 10:04:06 AM
It does look a little bit like it isnt completely hand pixelled but in some places it looks true. Just alot of colors. Like that demoscene stuff. But to anybody who says that helm and ptoing are jealous is just hilarious because their artwork is amazing and they have been on the pixel scene for a looooong time. Still a great peice of work though

Gold Yo (Level 1 Quiet One) at 8/7/2005 8:27:54 PM
Err... even if it wasn't pure pixel, it's still a nice bit of art.

Gold Yo (Level 1 Quiet One) at 8/7/2005 8:25:09 PM
Well.... DAMN! That's some impressive pixel placing.

perfectless (Level 1 Intern) at 8/6/2005 12:40:25 PM
It looks more like 3D art than pixel, but while zooming in it's clearly pixeled. Very well done.

Johnny Vandal (Level 1 Rookie) at 8/4/2005 3:31:36 AM
i like how some are saying its not pixel art...have you not zoomed in? you can clearly tell ti was done pixel by pixel..slay i applaud your work............very lovely.great colors and great dithering

excape25 (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/30/2005 5:42:51 AM
I can't believe it... this is pixel!!!

sigh at 7/19/2005 2:24:47 PM
it's funny how people call us to be jealous-kind, when they probably have never made a pixel art themselves. Most of us who claim this is NOT a pixel art have done pixelart more or less professionally for several years, some even over a decade. Go figure who to believe.

Monstara (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/18/2005 7:20:39 AM
So this is pixelart? For real?
Wow

kiwidesign (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/17/2005 12:50:46 PM
I agree with auron..... in all cases, a great piece More pixelart

Sallune (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/15/2005 8:06:50 AM
I like the piece, congrats ^_^

DarkAuron (Level 2 Quiet One) at 7/12/2005 7:23:55 PM
Yeah, those who doubt it are just jealous of their own lack of skills. Especially since the only ones who are disbelievers 1. have an immature tone in each of their messages and 2. don't have a profile/gallery to show, thus they have nothing and nothing to show for. Photoshop is too hi-end to care about how many colors you're using, and theres no way it can do that kind of hand-made dithering. And slay, this piece of work is one reason why a rating of 5 isn't always enough.

TheCrazySalesman (Level 1 Intern) at 7/11/2005 7:21:32 AM
You know, you doubters don't have to be angry about it just because *maybe* you're not talented enough to create something of such magnitude. I know that I could never do something like this and I applaud slay for creating it, even if he did not do it pixel by pixel. Either way, can't you appreciate it for being well done and creative? I know I can. It's wonderful, slay.

1ucas (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/30/2005 9:30:29 PM
Awesome concept. The shading is superb! :)

Claudster (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/30/2005 1:12:15 PM
Wow, this is amazing. And if you dont believe him, zoom in. You rock! Mad skills :P

The B.O.B. (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 6/29/2005 11:42:46 PM
Don't care how he did it. I just like the whole thing all together. Tis wonderful, and imaginative. Besides peepo, as hard as it may seem some people do have patience to complete a piece in it's entirity. In my case I would have only done about 30% of that and quit. He manages to "get er done" though. So kudos to you, guy, and have a good one...

u suck at 6/23/2005 7:49:42 AM

Helm at 6/20/2005 8:38:09 AM
Do whatever you want. If you like victimizing your own self, fine. Fact of the matter remains, that it's highly probable that most of your art is not 'CREATED BY YOUR HAND' anymore than a person using photoshop can claim the same about his art. I think it's possible you're confusing what HANDPIXELLING is and what INDEX PAINTING is. That you used oldschool means ( Deluxe Paint) and painted in indexed mode doesn't make the blur tool you used, the smear tool you used, the gradient tools you used, and less non-handpixelled. Handpixelling is the intentive placement and attention of composition on the PIXEL LEVEL. Sorry it has to come to this, but regardless of whether you've misunderstood something, or are outright lying, I really don't like false claims.

ta

Ptoing at 6/20/2005 2:53:58 AM
I have to agree with Helm on this one. I know Deluxe Paint as I used it back in the days and I have to say i am rather sure you used paintmodes like Smear or Airbrush (on the blue stuff), Blend (On the orange backgound) and Smooth (on some of the aa) as well as contour gradient fill (in the lower right corner grey thing).

And i also have to agree with Helm, that this in fact is not all that terrific.

slay (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/18/2005 12:43:18 AM
After some comments like the ones from Blick or Helm I really don't see any clue in submit  any new graphic at PixelJoint...  It's not so cool to read in every graphics that I public here, that it's color reduction or photoshop convertion... Especially if I spend a lot of days in hand pixelling of it. So thank you to all you strange "people of disbelieve"....  Anyway greetings to all, who belive in my stuff.

Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) at 6/17/2005 2:43:09 PM
Thanks for not believing the guy.  Jerk.

Helm at 6/17/2005 11:02:45 AM
Well I know what I'm talking about, and I'd have to say by my guess, this isn't handpixelled 100%. Modes were used, and then possibly tweaked by hand. Is this bad? No. Is this any less of what it is because of it? No.

It's not this great, there's blatant errors in the AA is places. But not many people do this sort of thing nowdays, so the level's down enough for this to classify as good.

Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) at 5/30/2005 2:44:00 PM

HOLY........CRAP

I wish they had a jaw-drop smiley here.  Sometimes it's better to use more colors.

Katy at 5/28/2005 10:49:29 PM
 HO-LY SHIT
AMAZING DUDE...JUST FREAKIN AMAZING...that only took you one month? it looks like it would have taken you likt 3 years...Geez

great demoscene artwork ;D

Skipper (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/8/2005 3:21:16 PM
If what you claim is true, then you, sire, have too much time on your hands

TakeOut (Level 2 Yellow Belt) at 5/8/2005 3:06:09 PM
This doesn't really "look" like pixel art to me, but it still looks very nice and godly to have been done completely by hand.

Brian the Great (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 5/8/2005 6:14:21 AM

Bisque (Level 1 Private) at 5/8/2005 2:39:48 AM
for any of you doubters, paste it into photoshop (etc) and zoom in, its DEFFINITELY pixeled o_o. Just wow <3

Blick (Level 6 Commander) at 5/7/2005 7:32:55 PM
It looks like a color reduction of CG to me, especially on the blue figure, but I've seen some amazing things done from Amiga artists, so I'll just keep the rest of my thoughts on it to myself as I may be wrong. Although, I may be right.
