This is for a job from:
http://www.thephorse.net/

It is for a game called Pioneer. The game's not done yet but as soon as it is, it will be on the site. (I don't know if it's freeware.)

The guy is a bit of a Han-Solo like dude. Doesn't take crap from anyone.
Can sometimes be a bit of an ass but his intentions are good.

Anyway, this is the first in a series of 14 portraits. Though I'll probably send the rest of the portraits in pairs of 4 or 5 or so.

You can also expect to see more pixel art of other jobs that I will
hopefully soon have the permission to upload for.

Peace out.
P.S: You can critique, however, this is finished. And I will not update it.
Critique can always be usefull for future stuff though, so don't hesitate too.
P.S P.S: Don't mind the low polish on a few parts on the hat. I missed it, will be fixed.

Mmm. Nice, but the hat seems like it is too far forward and too small for his head. Other than that, great! I like the style.

I guess you are focussing too much on the cell shading, volume etc here, and forgetting about the anatomy.. Even some lines are jaggy!!!

Not one of your bests...

Do hats have anatomy?

Nonetheless, I agree with FlyGuy. The hat doesn't look like it sits on his head properly. The brim is also very uneven, although it's possible that it's meant to be.

Overall the piece is decent, but suffers from some anatomical issues along with the whole lack of consistency thing. The stylistic background versus the semi-realistic portrait might work, but the smoke coming from the cigarette kind of ruins that contrast by attempting to mesh the two.

The dithering in this piece doesn't work very well and I'd suggest that you focus blocking out shades and AAing them rather than using dithering to accomplish this. Dithering should either be conistent or subtle, and it's neither here. If you're not limited to a set amount of colors, I'd probably add one for the shirt to replace that blue. If you are, it might be advisable to make the shirt the color of the whites of his eyes and use the blue to shade it.

The lightsource is also confused. This can be seen prominently on the face and the shadow of the collar. It's my impression that the light is coming from the top right, yet the face is lit up as if it were coming from the bottom left in some spots (under the hat), the top left in others (his nose and his cheeks), and also the top right (below his right cheek).

Regardless of all that, it's not a bad piece, which is why I took the time to point those things out. Consistency of style and lighting and a better grasp of anatomy and spacial orientation would really do wonders for this piece. I really like the skintones and colors in general, though.

It's not bad, but very sloppy.  Lines are rough, and use of dithering doesn't really make sense (it's too random)

The hat has a few anatomy issues. It's hard to explain, I just suggest looking at one on Google. Decent work, I see areas where there is dithering, and areas of a rough pillow shaded look, there isn't much consistency with the image. The colors are great, and the style is pretty good if it all matched. Good job over all.
