Just in time... for the challenge
Last 20 minutes were spent feverishly clicking around, so excuse stray pixels and jaggy edges should you find any.

The idea is that it resembles an atomic mushroom cloud. Always had these thoughts about civilization resetting itself once again. Also, mushrooms are recyclers of nature's garbage, so I found it fitting :D

edit: made a proper thumbnail previe

@Yellow Snow: There should, and there are.

Yellow Snow (Level 1 Private) at 7/6/2008 8:40:40 PM
Good job, there should be shadows of the mushroom top on the stem and the whole thing on the ground?

natsukilove2 (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/6/2008 8:02:01 PM
Amazing color usage, concept, details and overall execution! Luv it!

Zweckform (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/5/2008 10:25:50 AM
Great stuff here, 16 colours ? Wow. Ideas behind it  A+ :-)

SNickau (Level 1 Depressed) at 7/5/2008 7:16:26 AM
This is wonderful, the mushroom cloud meaning is very inspired, it is also brought across quite clearly - I didn't feel an explanation was needed. The art is also astounding. Very nice.

Expand (Level 3 Stalker) at 7/4/2008 1:48:12 AM
It looks like a painting. Amazing. The thought behind the mushroom is extremely creative.

Fuzzyleaves (Level 5 Detective) at 7/3/2008 9:48:35 PM
Vote for #1, I voted because of the double meaning, very cool pixel.

MashPotato (Level 6 Made) at 7/3/2008 7:07:08 PM
I love that cityscape, and the giant mushroom seals the deal

4tochkin (Level 1 Intern) at 7/2/2008 12:57:30 PM

Wow

homosapien (Level 1 Rookie) at 7/1/2008 10:50:36 AM
Nearly perfect, hand pixelled picture of an Amanita Muscaria growing out of a city. iKke, I like you a lot.

Arachne (Level 4 Murderer) at 7/1/2008 9:11:19 AM
I think the hat of the mushroom would look rounder if you moved the darkest shadow in towards the center as much as the highlight is positioned away from the center, and then have the sky illuminate the part between that and the edge. Apart from that, I think the washed out palette really gives a sense of dimension to this, and I'm amazed at how well the crumpled buildings read despite being so small. Nicely done.

zAk (Level 2 Quiet One) at 7/1/2008 8:06:54 AM
Awesome - i remember i once pshopped a photo of San Francisco together with a photo of an orange Jellyfish from an aquarium. 5/5 fav'd

Arfff (Level 3 Enforcer) at 7/1/2008 3:09:22 AM
I'm speechless! This is good taste plus excellent technique, times great concept...
So when are we gonna get iLKke as a featured pixel artist with an interview 'n' all? :)

iLKke (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 7/1/2008 2:53:32 AM
Thanks, ppl!  *blush*
I'll put up a WIP when I have time.

@Fool: I know ;) I thought the fact that amanita is a symbol of spiritual rebirth is a nice touch. It is also closely tied to New Year/Christmas, which is not only a symbol of renewal and rebirth, but is probably the only festivity still celebrated by all people on Earth.

@Mirage: That is flattering, but the truth is that I made almost the entire picture in one sitting, and there was no time for polish. Amanita should actually have an 'egg' that it grows from, I just went for the simple option. There are dozens of other things I would have tweaked as well. Meh. MAYBE after the challenge is over.

Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 7/1/2008 1:38:56 AM
Nice=)   Metaphor is even more interesting  - if prepaired properly those are very strong hallucinogene.=)

Doomcreator0 (Level 7 Sheriff) at 6/30/2008 5:56:59 PM
Great colors. Great style. Great piece.

Majoris (Level 1 Jukyu) at 6/30/2008 5:08:23 PM
Extremely awesome. I love the idea and the execution/style. This gets my vote.

Skurwy87 (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/30/2008 5:04:55 PM
*sigh* that's just. . . motherfucking awesome, man! tip-top! (at the first glance the lower part seems kind of neglected, though, but it matches the composition plane pretty well!). you're certainly one of the best pixel artists EVER! and believe me I've already seen many.

d-p (Level 10 Maniac) at 6/30/2008 2:14:54 PM
Phantastic idea and great result. faved.

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 6/30/2008 2:12:38 PM
Haha, you can see a nose on the mushroom!  Great work, lovely atmosphere.

inkspot (Level 4 Button Man) at 6/30/2008 1:29:58 PM
iLKke did it again! I absolutely love it. Where do you get your ideas from?

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 6/30/2008 1:12:45 PM
Great idea, top-notch execution.

Mirage (Level 3 Corporate Drone) at 6/30/2008 1:05:36 PM
Very nice! I don't think the sky looks 'Made' like, more 'iLKke' like ;)

I think i would have made the bottom of the mushroom wider, because now it looks like a man-made structure itself, almost like a skyscraper. It looks like you know what you are doing, anyway, so you must have had reasons to do it like this.

Perfect pixel-technique everywhere and lovely colours, thumbs up!

Pixelarg (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 6/30/2008 10:54:43 AM
You should create a tutorial pixel art, do not you think? ^^

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 6/30/2008 10:05:47 AM
great work! i love the background - sky ... "made" like ;)

@dogmeat you can learn something and from others :)

dogmeat (Level 7 General Manager) at 6/30/2008 9:01:45 AM

Too bad only iLKke has any real skill, the others are posers :)

As for the piece, this is really great. I think the scale of the mushroom is a little too much/unreal but it works in the way you have intended.

macula (Level 6 Hitman) at 6/30/2008 8:38:34 AM
Wow really nice piece!

ui_ (Level 1 Rookie) at 6/30/2008 8:21:32 AM
this is a mafia!!..... you, jamon, pain and mirage have it all!..... jajajajajaja..... this is amazing man!.... the colors and the idea are the best!...

ptoing (Level 6 Made) at 6/30/2008 7:22:46 AM
Awesome, both technically as well as conceptually. Fellations!

dumbo (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 6/30/2008 6:17:31 AM
Deep idea. And the Winner!!!

Cheshire (Level 1 Intern) at 6/30/2008 5:35:25 AM
5/5 from nature's garbage

DJD (Level 4 Button Man) at 6/30/2008 4:43:22 AM
that is such a cool idea and the execution is wonderful. There are times when pixelart fits beautifully alongside traditional art and I think this is one of those pieces. The bendy curvy bubblyness mixed with the colors gives me the same unique feeling that Van Gogh's unique skies would. Congrats on an awesome pixel!

Reo (Level 9 Executioner) at 6/30/2008 4:38:30 AM
Amazing! You know I love everything you do

Sabata (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 6/30/2008 4:34:05 AM
awesome you always manage to impress hum?

phob (Level 2 Kukyu) at 6/30/2008 3:39:20 AM

pain (Level 9 Nidan) at 6/30/2008 3:38:46 AM

I thought it was an explosion at first lol :-)

FrostPumpkin (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/30/2008 2:58:42 AM
I love those clouds <3
The idea of atomic mushroom really fit this piece as you said.

Peach (Level 3 Enforcer) at 6/30/2008 2:57:41 AM
awsome palette and well combined. it seems a watercolor drawing :)

Irozumi Urado (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/30/2008 12:15:31 AM
Great! o_O The attack of the giant shrooms from outer space! I love it. the colors are wonderfull.

skamocore (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 6/30/2008 12:05:51 AM
