For a game by the wonderful Requiem Software. This was a bit too ambitious on my part, and I should have researched how the color would have worked quite a bit more. The end result has something about it still, though.

love how you've done the glow. Real atmospheric.

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 9/18/2008 4:15:14 AM
NIce atmosphere... there is some problems with a face i think...

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/17/2008 7:08:13 PM
I agree on perspective.

As to looking like me yeah I sort of have this problem.

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 9/17/2008 6:50:09 PM
she looks a bit like you :P

"close" vanishing point is a function of angle measures to the eye - if we are close to the subject (intimate) the vanishing point will be "closer" (in that the object will fill our field of vision more.  if anything, a more gradual recession would decrease the emotional content of the piece.

Pretty sweet looking peice, Helm.  The glow is unique, yet really cool-looking.  My only complaint would have to be the face of the girl.  Its a little to flat-looking, and the length at which the face sticks outwards doesn't match the neck.

But, I do understand you had time limitations.  Good work!

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/16/2008 2:07:58 PM
Yeah these are for a job, and they're made on a tighter schedule than personal stuff.

Fenne (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 9/16/2008 11:25:31 AM
The face looks kinda strange to me,
but besides that I think it's an awesome work!

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/16/2008 1:50:48 AM
On the abstract, I don't see how having a close vanishing point is applicable only to things of massive scale. Perspective is an expressive tool, sharprm.

sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) at 9/16/2008 1:07:33 AM
Are her shoulders supposed to be a the same height. I'm reading that big highlight as being her shoulder. Taken that with the lines the mouth, eyes and hair make, it looks like you have a vanishing point thats in the page. Heres the question that i dont have an answer to: is that appropriate for a massive statue only?

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/15/2008 11:40:07 PM
re: webbed fingers
the soft tissue between the fingers is very thin and will get a lot of light going through it if close to a lightsource.

I don't think her body is thick or her boobs need to be moved, perhaps you're not seeing it in the same perspective as it's intended or... ?

I agree on the top of the hair crit.

Thank you for the critique.

sharprm (Level 4 Deputy) at 9/15/2008 10:53:58 PM
Can't say I like the squarish fingers. Her left hand is in a really ugly position. Also how you've shaded it makes her look like she has webbed fingers. I think her body is too thick (ie. boobs to back) and her head is out of perspective. Or maybe it is in perspective and I've never drawn people with vanishing points etc. For the top of the hair, its weird that one side catches the light from this point source and the other doesn't. For her left arm, tell me where her elbow would be?

Probably only some of these crits are right but I hope they assist you.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) at 9/15/2008 11:32:57 AM
big brother you are correct! how didn't I... notice that? Well, she has hands pickpockets would kill for!

Skurwy that sort of spirit is what I try to go for with my work most of all. Thanks for the kindness.

For me, pixel art is all about ambiance.  You know, that characteristic feeling you experience while going through those old forgotten games, or some more ambitious demoscene stuff.  Good technique makes it possible -- and you're really one of few who can still keep it alive.  This one, together with the other pieces you submitted today, has lots of that magic-k!  It would be a pleasure to have such an employee.

The lighting really works to create a field of depth. Minor nitpick - the first two fingers on her left hand appear to be the same length... (the index may even be slightly longer)

The hair is rather nice!

abra71 (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 9/14/2008 7:18:55 AM

Folk (Level 4 Murderer) at 9/14/2008 1:20:04 AM

Claredeth (Level 3 Hatchikyu) at 9/13/2008 10:15:43 PM
Very superb. Bright Gems for the fav.

japez (Level 1 Depressed) at 9/13/2008 9:40:06 PM
The colours are wonderful. Love the glow.

RoboBOT (Level 6 Commander) at 9/13/2008 8:51:12 PM
Very nice. I love the background texture and the closest hand. The light on the skin is a bit harsh, but it still looks nice.

brena (Level 1 Gangster) at 9/13/2008 8:00:10 PM
I think the colors are beautiful.. I love how the light works on the hands.. especially the closest one.
