Another attempt at photorealism in pixels. Quite a simple picture really, using many conventional pixelling techniques.

Thanks. I can't say exactly how many I used, but I think it was around 128 to create a very even and smooth look. In some of my later portraits I really tried to use as many colours as I could, plus dithering to try and keep up with Photoshop paintings that were just becoming popular.

It feels like a lot of the bone structure was lost in the conversion to from photo to pixel. No clavicles or sternocleidomastoid, just puffy, pillowy forms. On the pixel level, the technique could use some refining since there is a lot of banding going on, in both the dithering and the lines.

From a distance it looks like the photo. If that was your goal with this piece, then you accomplished it.

Looks vectorized. I can't vote when I doubt if is truely pixel-art.

Oddly enough, the only thing that does not match the referencei and is original work, the necklace, is really, REALLY simple and quite "boring", almost out of place in comparison to the rest of the picture.

Awesome technique skills, Wade, but lack of all other things =/

yay for referencing dune.

i think this is fine, and not a trace - the only major crit since it's meant to reproduce an image is that they way you've done the jawline gives her a little additional baby fat - fitting with the theme but perhaps not the character

Duude, what's up with the eyes? I like everything else!

user

nice one! But one thing I'm not sure I like is the fremen-style blue-in-blue eyes.

I voted yes right now. I think it is valid pixelart even though a bit unimaginative. I'm not sure if this is a recent work, but if you are still planning to work on it, I have some suggestions.

It would have been great if you have kept the original color of the light coming from the left. The parts where the skin meets the cloth are a bit rushed I guess. Especially where her top stands up. The fold of the top are a bit pillowy. Eyes lack a bit of detail, (her right one could be compensated if you push it back to the shadows a bit). The hair looks unnatural more like cloth. Her cheeks on the refenece picture are more round and her forehead should be a bit set back. You use some different skin tones here and there but the original has way more. Some slight green and blue shifts would benefit the piece.

I like the effect you used on the top.

I have 100s of Photoshop WIPS, but unfortunately all my Amiga WIPs are on my Amiga hard drive inside a broken Amiga. I had to download my own pixel art from the net just to have them on my PC.

If admins choose to reject my work that's fair enough. Not much I can do about it really, except post my older, crappier images.

i think wade has a point. if he's aiming for photorealism and his goal is to, in the end, mimic the image but not trace it. however, due the naturel itself of these pieces is always a must to save several stages so at the end a WIP gif clears any doubt about the valid pixel art work on the piece.

If the proportions are right, then it will obviously scale to fit the original reference.

The shape or detail of this picture aren't very complicated really and very easy to get right with the aid of a grid. Plus, I had already been pixelling for more than 5 years when I did this.

Metaru (Level 8 Spaceman) @ 1/16/2009 02:22
care to make a gif to show this comparision?

user
Shiru (Level 6 SWAT) @ 1/15/2009 14:39

I have said that it looks traced because I compared ref and your picture (scaled to fit and switched between them), and quite much parts were matched very close. Also, it uses very many colors, most of them are hard to differ, that adds some doubts. I think, you must realize that works of that type and level without WIP will get comments like this.

If this is not trace and not edit of color-reduction etc., then, of course, it is quite awesome.

user
Wade (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/15/2009 13:31
Well, it's definitely not traced (I even get people say that about my Photoshop work until I started making videos), but I did use a grid to help with proportion.

I guess I can only feel flattered by comments like that though.

Platnium (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/15/2009 11:19
The eyes look too blue, and looks traced...

user
Arylic (Level 4 Lieutenant) @ 1/14/2009 17:51
Wow awesome..hope i could make something like that.

user
Shiru (Level 6 SWAT) @ 1/14/2009 15:11

It looks traced, not made from scratch using reference.

Hapiel (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 1/14/2009 15:05
Ah, that looks way more pixelly.
Also less photo realistic, mostly because of the colors, and the tooo pure skin (extremely smooth, I wish my skin was like that), but that brings more attention to your artistic skill :)
