why can't it be a game? anyone want to get together with me, gbdk, and a tile editor and stop wishing?
this looks amazing! inspired me to begin work on my own rpg gameboy styled game.. borrowed your colour pallette :) I'm seriously blown away by this!
Your work is so motivating but more important, captivating :)
There's a special place in my heart for 1bit and/or 4bit art, and this just hits it out of the park.
I wish the real gameboy devs back in the day had done anything remotely this good. (Maybe they have and I'm unaware).
With art like this, the good old Gameboy could have stayed young for many more years, I'd say.
lol I had so much fun pasting this into paint and just swapping colors to see the changes. Incredible stuff man, epic job.
It makes me sad that this isn't a real game. Go make it!

When GB stroke my country was still actualy behind Iron curtain so I dont know: are there actually any existing games for GB with this level of graphic awesomness ?
(or would it be even possible, considering memory, sprite and cartridge limitations etc ?)

Well, this is cool with me. I actually made a real tileset to work with and honestly the paintings pretty much tell you what is needed and all characters are there with many to spare. I could have made 20 screens, one for each year.
TBH, this was weirdly easy because the ref material did all the thinking for me, the paintings already DO look like RPGs.
I can't program anything but will help you make such a game...especially if its a small mini quest.

Dude... that's so awesome. The idea in itself is awesome, and it translates to gameboy format like... perfectly.
Seeing something like this makes me angry!
...that I can't produce anything like this, how hard I try. Beeing as good as you are must be some kind of felony?
But as a contra attack I can program a game using the graphics. 
But if you say that you can do so as well, I'll kill myself.

@dumbo, this would never happen! I do hope you don't think this is true.This challenge was in fact a bit of a last minute thrown together thing when several chatterbox comments last week were about a mockup challenge and then one Mod said its was GB 20th Aniv.

btw this is really good, I love how the rats look. they're perfect.
although the white hollow monster looks a bit weird in the leg area.

oh wait... found a huge limiting factor: there are only 4 colors. there is no alpha. you just have to choose one of the colors to sacrifice to alpha in characters when programming. seriously though someone who's experienced with gbdk could help a lot
