I like the idea with preview as a second image. It's two pixel art in one.

Very nice colour choice on the out-of-water one. However, the version with him in the water looks a bit odd; the portion of him that's wet is all the same colour. The water does change his skin color, but I'd suggest using a slightly opaque layer next time to get a more realistic look.
