I swear when I posted there was only 7 pokemon per row, maybe my browser simply hadn't loaded properly.
Now that I can see them all, glad to see you went with alien looking mew from rather than the cute mew it became.
Gloom looks more awesome than ah Vileploom I think it's name is.
I've pixelled all 151, this is as done as it'll get since I won't touch the newer generations
That Haunter, so awesome! Are you still working on the other 33 by the way? I'd love to see this completed.
These are some really interesting takes on Pokemon. Some of them look like they were based a lot off of the Red/Green sprites (i.e.:Mew especially). The shading / color is also quite terrific. Overall, this is just really cool to look at.
Epic Chillhood Piece :D
Thx A LOT :D
Really nice u take freedom for some of them (even of course, some i dislike, some i really love :3). Also Cute u stopped to the first generation; the others, in my opinion, really sucks...
This is pretty insane you did them all ! I love the way you play with their character design and draw them your style.
Some are a little under the top but most of them are really great. My favorite are Primeape, wartortle and haunter
Daaang, as much as I dislike Pokemon, these are all absolutely fantastic. No idea how I hadn't seen them before.
Omg. How did I miss this? Cure, marry me.
Like, omg, this makes me wish so bad that this was in Fire Red and I could play it. omgomgomg
Nintendo should hire you to do the sprites in thier game, these are better than the ones they have.
This is perfect. These Saturated colors do fit there verry well.
love the colours and shading in this..! I love my old pokemon games :3
Amazing work, thank you for sharing cure. My baby bro was following these too and loved them - inspiring work!
With your artstyle, the red/green/blue almost look like they should have been the real designs. These creepy, dark looking pokemon are starting to grow on me.
I see. Well personally I felt the anime ruined a lot of the original character designs found in red/green/blue, and as such yellow was also heterodox. I prefer giant-tongued goofy golbat, and freak experiment mewtwo, etc.
I know they're original. My point when suggesting having referenced Yellow is because they redid some if not all sprites for Yellow, because the companies wanted them to match the anime better. For example, Haunter looks a lot less evil, Geodude looks more rocky, Golbat no longer has a super tounge, Mewtwo looks thinner and more magestic, Exeggcute no longer has a super sized main egg, and a bunch more changes.
From what I can tell from your pictures, is that most of them reference the Blue/Green/Red sprites, But all of them are completely original.
Great work. I like the bold hues. Interesting take on the first 151 Pokémon. Your Mew takes me back to the horror of its original Red/Green design.
This is amazing... Honestly your work is awe inspiring!
@mikau: Pokemon yellow has the same monsters as red and blue. I referenced sprites from most of the games, including yellow, when making these. These are not the original art, they're scratch.
@friend: of course.
@jal: I prefer them on the lighter shade of grey I used, as opposed to pj's default :P
@Lucas: no, I'll sue.
It's far too late to say this, but maybe doing Pokemon Yellow's sprites would have been a good idea.
But I LOVE seeing the original art done in a more detailed style, it gives these guys a much darker feel to them.
I just noticed, is that white pixel to the upper right of exeggcute intentional?
...and now we have proof that a useless BG can rise to the top >.<
Wonderful work! My favorites are Blastoise, Haunter and Electrode =)
This is tremendous! Some very lovely renders here.
But I can't help but feel they're all a bit oversaturated. I understand it's a lot about personal preference, but it seems to me like all your versions of the Pokemon are a bit more menacing than the originals and I think the high saturation kind of clashes with that, because it suggest a more cartoony aproach like in the games. (Am I making any sense here?)
That's of course just a nitpick, and a pretty personal one at that. It truly is a fantastic collection.
You my friend are the undisputed king of pixel art. This is unprecedented.
I don't know how I missed this. You're one of my biggest inspirations since your 'I Am Legion' The simplicity, effectiveness and flawless pixel technique are truly amazing.
im not a big pokemon fan, but your collection here is really impressive (in a good way for non-pokemon fans as well), but a few renders in particular are pretty exceptional.
I can imagine this being up on reddit and then getting linked by kotaku and then getting you all kinds of exposure ^^
Hapiel's comment gave me an idea. Can I print this and hang it on my wall? O:
+1 on what mdog said. these are great. u sure got talent.
nyno: I used the sprites from the game as references, and based a lot of poses on them, especially on sprites from green/red and red/blue (mew, abra, articuno, grimer, hitmonlee, tentacruel). Tried to match the spirit of the original sprites overall though.
mdog: in a perfect world.
The coloration and poses of the pokemon are bright and dynamic. It's obvious to see that you've put a lot of work into this, My personal favorites are Flareon and Dragonite, they both look so epic.
Absolutely AWESOME!!!
I'm a pokefan and a pixel-art fan so this piece is very appreciated for me. I really like the shadows and their mad and realistic faces.
Wow, so much to learn from every of these sprites. Awesome job !
You're the one who should be paid to pixel the Pokemon characters for the games. This is awesome.
These are really awesome. It's great to remember how different the Pokémon sprites looked back in the red/blue/green days - almost like prototypes of themselves, or 'feral' versions in many cases. You really captured that well here. Some I think aren't as appealing as their modern iterations (Butterfree, Mew), whereas others are much more awesome (man, that is what a Flareon, Marowak and Dragonite should look like).
I assume all of these are updates of old sprites, since I recognize the pose of a lot of them - I assume the ones I don't were from green. Overall great job, great concept, great use of color - simply fantastic. This must be a 'thing' now, since I think Jinn's been working on an updated old-school Pokédex too, if I'm not mistaken.
I have to say, your take on Scyther is fantastic! The rest is wonderful as well, of course.
I used to have a poster with all these. Thatone was by far not this awesome!
I would wish that my version of pokemon blue were lik that
Looks fantasic, studied most of them in detail. Found a single bad pixel (a pixel with a slightly different hue/saturation than the other ones) on Graveler, in the middle of it.
Jigglypuff is pretty wonky, but I personally think that the others are quite great. No real pixelling mistakes there, it's just the design choices, and I like them. But that's me. Sandslash, one of my favs, and so is Mew.
Far as scaling goes, I think Charizard and Charmeleon suffer the worst. Such a shame that you can't just drag and resize things on pixel art :P
Oh, and Hypno's beard. I think you might want to work on there a little bit more. It's a bit off as well.
I really like this, but jiggly puff is the wonkiest in my opinion. His left eye has too much of a side perspective, while being able to see the head on the other side of it. It makes it seem like he has one circular eye, and one oval eye half the size.
Pretty much the coolest thing in the world ever.
You should do a mockup of the overworld now ^^
Not all are perfect but this is truly a joy to behold! The level of attention makes my pixelheart very happy! My favorites are Mewto, Dragonite, Omanyte, Scyther, Rhyhorn, Lickitung, Haunter, Grimer, Dugtrio, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. But so many more are also great. Damn!
Frostbutt: No, I go about pixelling in a more painterly way. I lay out blocks of color with a 2x2 brush and only add lineart when the general shape has fallen into place.
Faceless: I agree about eevee's evolutions (caterpie is also pretty large). I didn't consider scale as much in the ones I made early on. Unlikely to fix those, but I may end up doing some edits on the wonky looking Pokemon.
Well since you asked, the ones I think are most in need of attention are Sandslash, Clefable, Jigglypuff, Persian, Tentacool, Ponyta, Slowbro, Marrowak and Mew.
I also think there's some scaling issues with the three Eeveelutions. Jolteon looks about the right size, but Vaporeon and Flareon look enormous.
Another possible thing is hitmonchan's legs being too short. Again, this may just be stylistic and the perspective, but for some reason hitmonchan is the only one I find truly discontinuous other than maybe hypno and sandslash.
What I really wanted to know is about the process. Did you start each one with line art?
DB: Pac-man! It's pronounced Pac-Man.
cure: Love the colours and the Pikahchu, you made it look like an actual creature rather than a stuffed toy.
wow, I really enjoyed your work, good shading, colors well chosen, you practically "reinvented" pokemon with that realistic style ^ ^
Super mega-boga job!
Well, i like too much of this job.
That's what I call a monster job! But I have to admit; it's a bit concerning that a grown man would spend so much time with Pokemons (or whatever they are called)! :D
Pikachu and mew are some of my favs here. Sandshrew too. And- okay, I'll just end up listing most of them.
I think you did a really good job on most things with snouts.Like Vulpix.Certainly different than what we are used to, but it just looks so cool.
sanfrouah: tough to say, I just worked on them in spare time. maybe 200 hours? too long.
frostbutt: the green mew looks pretty grounded to me, the awkwardness is why I love it.
faceless: agree. with 151 there are bound to be some slackers. feel free to point out any particularly awkward pokemon (my own choices would be sandslash, nidorino, vulpix, persian, machop, farfetch'd, and hypno)
Whoa, so much to learn here, yet sooo so much to enjoy. The ambition and consistency is mindblowing, as is the final result. The colors and shading are absolutely amazing. The poses and the slight bit of biological realism here and there are even more impressive.
One thing though, I love how you used the green version mew, which is a very stylish choice, but I think what makes the green version sprite work is how the green version's mew's pose looks more like a floating in the air, and the feet are very elongated, which balance out the massive head. Your version looks like a standing pose, which makes it look very awkward, even more so with the smaller feet, if this makes sense.
I'd like to now how many hours of work on this masterpiece?
This is extremely cool first of all, but also very consistent, and true to the originals while keeping a personal touch.
Some of these are really awesome, but I find a lot of them quite awkward looking...
Standouts for me are Charmeleon, Blastoise, Zubat, Venamoth, Drowzee and Kabuto.
aw shite man I almost remember all of them. good work cure though some might have been better in a larger scale.
Wow! That's an incredible amount of awesomeness at once! Amazing work!
Ah, I hadn't seen that Mew sprite before. Looks quite different than any versions I've seen before.
As for the Pikachu and Eevee I think it's just the way you rendered the noses/snouts or something, can't quite put my finger on it exactly. I don't think you should worry about it too much though, just the realistic way you decided to render some of them made me go 'that looks cool!' and with others it made me go 'that looks odd.'
So cool! I like your interpretation of the different Pokemon and how they have a touch of realism to them.
I was without a doubt speechless when i clicked this. You did an amazing job, i simply have no words to describe how much character you were able to give to these...it's just...wow! Great pixeling
This is indeed awesome. I feel like some are too dark, like Meowth, but most of these are exceptionally well done. Great job!
YES! This is incredibly inspiring. Love it. Thank you!
Dr. D- Eevee was a quickie and could probably be improved. Dewgong was also a quickie but its design is pretty boring so I wasn't too dissatisfied with it. Pikachu I actually like, but this is the second time pikachu has been mentioned, what exactly do you think is off about it? Mew I'm quite happy with, it's a reference to the sprite from green, which may account for it looking odd:

These are phenominal. A tougher emphasis on the monster aspect, brilliant.
