I think it isn't 3D afied beacause it only has 32 colors.

True. Knowing that I've seen no more than a dozen people achieve good 3dimensionality with C-64 palette packs some confort tho...

user
hannahjap (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/14/2012 1:13:34 PM

That exactly. It's far too wide of a skill gap.

user
cure (Level 11 Sensei) at 8/14/2012 9:33:02 AM

I'd say the disparity between the three dimensionality seen in this suspicious-looking piece and the flatness seen in your unsuspicious piece is quite a wide gulf.

Is it possible the error in highlight over the eyelid could have been caused not by the 3d rendering, but by the color reduction process?  I can see that being a source of technical screw-ups.  I wouldn't know; I've never used color reduction.  If so hnt, then you had me fooled!  The skill of that window reflecting along the eyeball itself is something I rarely see pixel artists achieve as well.

Still a fave anyway : ) but shame on you - !

Yeah, just like the hilights/reflection on the pupil of Your eye avatar ;)

Take a look at http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/72166.htm . I'm really interested in what You will say...

3D render - color reduced.... =(

All your gallery is color reduced... (on some pictures you acheved to reduce even a Blurines of source images =)

I've taken the investigative interrogation for my art on pixeljoint too, and I am thinking to just kindly stick it out.  There are loads of people on here who can simply appreciate a skilled piece without the questioning and without whining over how many colors one uses.

That being said, I have something to offer the "doubters" of this piece anyway.  If it was created first by rendering in 3d software and then color-reduced, I do not believe there would be that glaring error in highlight.  You can see there is a sharp highlight on the eyeball itself, and then when the eyelid passes over it, in the same spot the highlight is actually missing on the eyelid.  Looks like a simple mistake hnt made which 3d software would not make ; )  Someone familiar with limits and "bugs" in 3d software rendering may prove me wrong, though.

I like your eyeball, hnt.  Very Pixar indeed!!

Thanks everyone!

hannahjap - I didn't post the whole piece because I initially set my aim too high for my level of skill and patience. This kind of advanced dithering turned out to be a nightmare for me. When I progress on a piece I have a habit of placing more and more detail on a specific area which attracts my attention for whatever reason while leaving the rest naked (that's totally wrong, I know, but I can't help it, I'm not disciplined enough to streamline the process) - so I ended up with this crop simply cuz I didn't have the strength to finish the whole piece - not with this level of dither. Having read what I just wrote, it occured to me that it actually kinda answers the very start of Your question - I didn't post the whole piece because I didn't finish the whole piece. I didn't finish it because the dither work became a pain. And it became a pain because I didn't  (how people around here use to say) "render" it... Still - I've come to love this exact crop - who cares about the reasoning behind it - and it's also small enough tu be used as avatar.

Nice picture. You seem to be an expert at dithering, giving the image this super-realistic look that makes some people react.

Altough the way the image is framed bothered me a little. I didn't quite grasp that it was supposed to be an eye, before I saw that preliminary sketch of yours. But that could just be me being stupid... :p

He probably did it because he liked how it looked. This is a very nice piece of art. And I don't think some of you guys know what the word "Render" means.

user
hannahjap (Level 4 Button Man) at 8/9/2012 11:26:45 AM

If this one wasn't rendered, why didn't you post the whole piece? The wip shows that it started out as a full eyeball.

user
RileyFiery (Level 6 SWAT) at 8/9/2012 10:40:16 AM

Your pieces vary too greatly in style, detail, and overall technique so I have my reasonable doubts. If this is a legit piece then it's very nice.

I like the antialiasing effect on the eyelid and also the specular lighting :)

Don't bother getting defensive, it won't accomplish anything!  I've put a few people in their places over the years but in the end the "gestapo" still rules the place.    It is, sadly, just the way it is around here.  If you aren't one of the well known veterans you're a plagarist until you prove you're not.  It's ridiculous and creates a bad feeling of elitism and accusation.  There are a few really helpful people though (some I've even met in real life) but, like any place online, there's the douche-bags too!  I very rarely post my work on here anymore... I just come here to look at art.  The best thing you can do is just develop a thick skin, ignore the idiots, and take periodic jabs at the establishment :)

Now... about this piece.  I dig it!  I kind of wish I could see more of it but creating that animation must have been murder at even such a small scale!  It does look rendered... but that's a compliment!  Not an accusation :)

Yeah well, I didn't react immidiately, I just stopped using the site for a few days, then came back and saw all the investigative thinking and that made me post my comment and fish around for wip pics so I can post them which I absolutely hated for some reason, it just made me feel silly, like having to empty my pockets on a supermarket cash register. Kind of a bad feeling that's all. I think no one should make anyone feel bad around here. I think my pixelwork is hopelesly mediocre at best, plus I don't think it makes any kind of impact, so why the charade? Anyway, yes You're right, I could have posted the wip without any comments, or could have just left the site (which still seems like a very viable option), instead of bothering people with this whole "thread". For which I apologize to everyone, I really think people come here to see some nice pixel art or get advice on their own work, not to read this kind of exchange.

tanuki (Level 7 Ichikyu) at 8/8/2012 6:34:11 PM

First off, this looks pretty cool. :)

Please understand our perspective- Someone new posts several works of differing styles and detail/quality levels (this one being far more intricate that your first two portraits) and at least two of them (this and moonrage) look very much like color reduced versions of either a cg render or photo. Of course that's going to raise a few eyebrows.

The unfortunate reality is that sometimes new members do post work that either, for one reason or another, simply wasn't pixel art or that upon a little bit of searching we find was ripped from one game or another, or from some deviantart account, or even (oddly enough) from someone else on this very site. I think I only saw that last one happen once though. These unfortunate realities are a big part of why there's a queue for something to be accepted.

The point is, while we're normally really nice here, you might be right that we seem a little edgy right now. Then again, it's not without reason and you were actually only asked by a few people, fairly nicely, for WIP images or references, so you're kind of being unnecessarily defensive right now accusing everyone of being a gestapo, an inquisition, being uptight, having "problems," etc.

its just that sometimes the art you make is so good that peope become suspicious.

Hi everyone!
I'm feeling totally awkward doing this, it looks like I'm in some kind of silly defensive being under some kind of silly attack by the PixelGestapo. Normally I would steer clear of the site once I got the idea what's it really about (silly me I thought it was an art&technique improvement site), but I hope that the wip pics could help clarify whatever is bothering the Great Inquisition. If not, I'm not sure how much I really care anymore, i kinda got pretty dissapointed with PixelJoint. It really shouldn't be the place where one has to present evidence .. .  .  ..errr just listen to the sound of it... evidence of what?  ... why?.... I don't see the point really. Really, just think of it. Well some people are just too tense & uptight i guess.. Their bad, not mine, who knows what their true problems are... And I don't enjoy proving people wrong either, it's just so silly on a site like this, this should be all about fun & enjoyment & learning. Cheerz everyone... I still think there's literally tons of excellent stuff on PixelJoint, it just sems some of the natives are a little edgy for some reason.

anyway, some dithering progress pics for "bobo" :

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2562/wiprandom6stagesbig.gif

and an early sketch (while still 100px big) of "avatar"

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6126/blink100pxwip01.gif

...I can post some wip work for other two pieces if anyone's still interested and if I see some responses so I muster up the will to do it...

Cheerz again!

After looking at your galery most of the things look ike photo reductions, including this. So any WIPs?

user
Antiboton (Level 7 Mass Murderer) at 8/4/2012 11:42:19 PM

This doesn't look like pixelart.

user
Delicious (Level 8 Guerrilla) at 8/4/2012 11:59:34 AM

Any progress images? This, as well as the other works in your gallery, look like a photo reduction...
