Sand monster ftw, I really like how this project is turning out. Good luck to both you and Jatz.
I don't think there's anything set up at the moment to alert people of progress. I'll tell Jatz about it, and see if he wants to make something.
That looks even better now! It's more readable that way. :)
Is there any devlog or website so we can follow the progress? :D
I darkened the background tiles making the foreground stick out better rather than blending with it. It does look better than before. I'm glad you like it and as always, thank you for your feedback.
Lovely, again. :)
I'd make the background sand tiles a bit darker and/or less colorful, just so they don't blend too much with the foreground tiles. Love all the little details, from the bones in the sand to the monster in the cave! It really looks great. :)
I attempted to change the bones again. The purple is too dark, which I did try, so I tried it with a dark gray and brown. I will most likely add a rock, but not a ton of 'em. When I thought of a desert, I went straight to thinking of a cactus, a dying plant, and sand. Rocks crossed my mind later on, but at that point I had filled the scene up with stuff so I didn't want to clutter it more.
The (messed around for awhile, couldn't find a nice vibrant color to go on blue, will keep at it) red/orange burning sun, I imagine typically as it gets late in the day. It can be done. I need to doodle up some more enemies, because gargoyle sphinxs sound great.
Thanks for the good feedback.
Looks good. The texture on the sand tiles is a bit odd, creating strange impressions (as in holes, not like when you first meet somebody) The bones in contrast to this aren't as immediately noticeable. For the outline/sellout of the bone try adding in that purple you have in the cave just around the corners before the bulges and that should allow the white of the bone to stand out a bit more against the sand.
Rocks would be a nice touch, even redish rocks like Uluru. Ontop of previous mentioned pyramids, Sphinxs would be nice (and would make for fun gargoyle-esk enemies)
One thing that would be neat is if in different climaes the sun and sky changed. In a desert terrain I'd love to see the sun a burning red/orange compared to the happy yellow of the hill area.
Thanks, the sun is one of my favorite things so far.
@Drawing, I'm glad you like it mate. I'm trying my best to make something good looking for the style of game.
I'm glad you saw it as bacon. The bones do blend in a bit too much. I think I'll try to work them a little differently. I don't want them to stand out too strongly, but I certainly don't want them to blend in too well with the bright sand. I was thinking of adding a pyramid and the decorations you mentioned, but then I thought a player wouldn't see that stuff everywhere in the desert, so maybe a normal scene would work. Don't get me wrong, I totally plan to do that stuff.
Edit: Tried to edit the bone a bit to make it stand out a little better. I don't want to do a solid outline because it looks too thick even with a lighter color. If you have a suggestion, hit me with it.
Thanks for the great feedback Mrmo.
I'm glad you like the art. Considering both Terraria and Starbound are sandbox type games, it's pretty damn similar. Pillage is also under the sandbox category. I can't speak for Jatz on how it will be played, but I think of it more comparable to minecraft.
@Quarry, it wasn't really meant as one, but that works!
Ooh, another one! Nice :D
The bones kinda blend in too much with the sand, maybe?
Some obelisks/monoliths, and/or pyramids would be the first thing I'd add to a desert btw :)
Also hot pig + bacon comment, hahah omg :D
I loved the easter egg fish cloud! Also @FlyGuy; it's because this has a defined style and neither one of those do
Sounds like Terraria or Starbound...looks good too. I actually think this art looks much better than theirs. Good work.
Thank very much man. Jatz almost has terrain generation nipped in the butt for all biomes. I'm glad you like it.
