This is just a quick (one day's work) mockup of an idea ive had for a while of doing a GBA adventure RPG like SoM but with a more in-depth fighting system (multiple party members on screen that you can switch between, short and long ranged weapons used at the same time, lock-on target system....etc)

Shameless advertising out of the way, what are the sorts of things people are seeing wrong with it? Should it ever become a real product, it would be good of me to do it well ^^

That is gorgeous work! I love it! SoM is one of my all time favorite GBA games. I can not express how much I adore this!

slym (Level 5 Lieutenant) at 10/5/2009 3:35:25 PM

Oh yeah, now that I look at it more, the tiles are a little different.

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 10/5/2009 10:25:21 AM

Yeah, it's actually slightly older than the one on the left I think but I found it on an old hard drive and felt like posting :)

slym (Level 5 Lieutenant) at 10/4/2009 6:05:58 PM

Hey you added another screen! I love the buildings. Awesome job.

Mm, looks nice and simple and attractive.

PanicBomber (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 4/2/2009 2:04:04 PM

Spike Xian (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/14/2008 6:21:43 PM

Morgengrauen (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 12/12/2007 2:06:35 AM

ultima (Level 2 Hired Gun) at 11/27/2007 6:57:38 AM
i was gonna say that gurakuto anyway looks so real great work

gurakuto (Level 1 Rookie) at 9/3/2007 11:42:10 PM
Ah, reminds me playing seiken densetsu...

Gelsamel (Level 1 Gangster) at 9/1/2007 7:53:32 PM
Wow, looks a lot like SoM and the character reminds me of Ronixis (sp?) from SO.

PrettyCoat (Level 1 Gangster) at 7/31/2007 1:41:28 AM
Beautiful for a GBA game

Stan20 (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 7/15/2007 2:26:12 PM
Very good work

SpecsNCandy (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 7/13/2007 5:39:01 AM
It's gorgeous :3 Everything looks so perfect...

Josiah (Level 8 Marshal) at 3/2/2007 5:09:52 PM

the colors......

great work

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/22/2007 2:38:18 AM
Great posture of the character!

Imp (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/11/2007 8:34:00 AM
I like it, though the palette is a bit overlighted in my opinion. A little darkening would make it better.

rabidbaboy (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 1/28/2007 8:54:45 PM
The colors are awesome.
An enemy or two on-screen wouldn't hurt though.

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 1/18/2007 5:15:19 PM
oohh ok, i see now

happip (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 1/17/2007 10:46:53 AM
a mockup is like a fake screenshot of a game, everything was placed to look like an in-game thing

silent sniper (Level 1 Depressed) at 12/6/2006 7:10:36 PM
ermm... i know this may sound sad, but whats a mockup?

FlyGuy (Level 7 Underboss) at 11/24/2006 2:00:31 PM
Yeah this is one of hte most kick ass mock ups ive seen on PJ....5/5 A fucking + man...

Stwelin (Level 2 Dealer) at 11/23/2006 7:02:16 PM
That would be some crazy kind of control for a GBA game.  Switching between characters, differently ranged weapons, etc.  I love everything about Secret of Mana, especially the menus and fighting system.

Anyway, this mockup looks amazing. +5, +fav.

verfum (Level 3 Private Eye) at 8/25/2006 4:29:41 PM
Where can I download the game?! Think I've asked that already

lilhawk2892 (Level 1 Depressed) at 8/17/2006 12:47:20 PM

warleygp (Level 3 Private Eye) at 5/27/2006 8:11:34 AM
Nice Colors, Nice Art,  i love the Mana series and love this art.

halfDemon (Level 6 Hitman) at 5/7/2006 10:32:59 PM
Great Sword of Mana mock up. Very nice. Fav!

grim666 (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/5/2006 8:44:44 PM
YAH I think it is a great piece. I would play it hoping that it had good depth to the story and good game play. The only think I would say is worng is that the colors need more sateration, I like the pastel, but maybe a little more sateration. Awsome.

buloght (Level 6 Hitman) at 4/21/2006 2:19:00 PM
I love this, the colours, the style and the character! This is one of my top favourites on pixeljoint!

dm404 (Level 1 Rookie) at 3/24/2006 8:59:16 AM
Very nice piece!  The tilesets blend so seamlessly together.  I love mock up game screens.

Yair (Level 4 Mercenary) at 3/8/2006 1:07:27 AM
I was showing it to a friend, since we were speaking on Secret of Mana 2...
Man it is so cool that he asked what console is it for if I'm not wrong, It is actually like a real! Put it on Google image and I'll might think like that too! as well! I love Mock-ups! This is one that I really like!

Elk (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 3/7/2006 8:53:45 AM

I love how you colored it :)
The trees have interesting colors
Everything matches with all

hawken (Level 1 Quiet One) at 2/27/2006 5:53:37 AM
thats really sweet, nice colour choice too!

acrylicana (Level 1 Intern) at 2/1/2006 3:36:40 PM
Great job. I love the bright, friendly colors. :D

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 1/27/2006 11:36:41 AM
Ive done so many 24x32 characters that even though it was done from scratch i wouldnt be suprised if it looked like every other character of the same size, especially st0ven's as i was raised on his tutorials (though i only read tutorials, not follow them, i find that following leads to routine leads to breakdown of originality, though since this character looks like 5,000 others, there may already have been that breakdown ^^)

by the way people the outline isnt black, isnt even close to black, and never has been even on the first state, it just happens to be darker than everything else, and the current character uses a lighter outline like the bushes, i simply havent uploaded a new mockup (which also fixed the bad copy-paste work at the top of the path and the bad footprints)

The purple is a style point that im not going to get rid of for no other reason than because i like it.  Also, this image should not be zoomed in ever if people are zooming it, since its going to be on the gba.  Not zoomed in, the purple is not really a distraction.

You are right about the bushes, they were done first before i started trying to conserve colors and i could knock off a few shades to save colors, though the entire game will employ the same <256c palette, so whether i use them or not doesnt matter since they are on there, unless i get to a point where i really need another new color added.

Filax_666 (Level 6 Hitman) at 1/27/2006 11:21:23 AM
Great stuff!

I never played SoM, and only saw a few screens but, from what I recall, this is totally diferent (but I'm probably wrong).
Did you use st0ven's base to the characther? Cause it really looks like it....

-DE- (Level 8 Cannibal) at 1/27/2006 4:29:32 AM
Hmm, even though the palette is *slightly* different, the patterns are almost exactly the same as in SoM!
Anyway, colors used on dirt don't have enough contrast.
Those "bushes" use too many colors and don't go well with ground tiles, plus those black/purple lines ruin it.
The char's black outline make it stand out too much. You could've colored the outlines, LIKE IN SOM, so it blends more and yet is distinguishable.
The bars are way too big, and there are too many of them.
Another thing is how did you manage to fit 600 colors in this (at least that's what Irfan and PSP counted)?
Anyway, even though it is quite good technically, it looks like ripped from SoM, no matter what you say, and that's not a good thing...

Faceless (Level 1 Depressed) at 1/26/2006 7:49:33 PM
Don't be so defensive, my post wasn't an attack on you, merely me trying to help you to improve these tiles.

There was no accusation, I said the grass tiles "seem very similar" to SoM's and your Palette is also very similar to SoM's. That's not an accusation, it's an observation.

You asked for crits on it as if it were going to be a published game, and those are areas I think need more originality. At the moment this looks a bit like a Seiken Densetsu fangame, and whilst it does look nice, that's probably something you want to avoid in an original title.

EyeCraft (Level 3 Stalker) at 1/25/2006 5:15:35 PM
Oh and  maybe those light areas of plain green in the grass, maybe there could be a bit more of a transition into them with a "dithering of grass blade shadows " i suppose I'll call it.

EyeCraft (Level 3 Stalker) at 1/25/2006 5:13:18 PM
Phwoar, this looks bloody great! Besides the things already pointed out, something that refused to sit right with me was the outline/shadow colour of the umbrella-style plants. That washed out purple, it seems too light, or maybe too grey. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to sit right.

I think that this would certainly make it as a GBA product, both graphics wise and gameplay wise.

fil_razorback (Level 5 Lieutenant) at 1/24/2006 11:45:57 AM
Awesome...It looks like a real game

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 1/24/2006 10:31:05 AM
Also, i assure you, this will not be a SoM clone if i can help it, because as mush as i like FFA, SoM, and SD3 (id like it more if the company had translated it instead of some guy in his basement, but w/e), the gameplay in those will be very different to this game, which will play a little bit similarly to Dark Cloud 2 with multiple party members and magic (so nothing like dark cloud 2 ^^)

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 1/24/2006 9:57:54 AM
Sword of mana didnt originate the style of grass, and i didnt actually notice the similarity until you pointed it out, having never played the game, though i have seen screens, this is based on a tileset id made for RPGm95 ages ago, and that tileset was an attempt to only use a few colors to create different shadows, etc, mixed with a grass shape the i used in a very old project (indefinately on hold now) for an isometric rts.  The pallet is one thats been used as my default for years, i just havent used those greans like this before, and i usually mix colors differently than this, but even so, so far as colors are concerned you might as well accuse SSD as using my pallet lol.

Im open to criticism, but bogus accusations are not things i take kindly to, so unless you can back up your arguments beyond basic resemblence, keep them to yourself, especially when even were you spot-on with what you thought, there still would not be any theft involved anyhow.  Dont waste my time with that kind of crap.

You are right though about the footprints ('4 circles in the dirt')  they really do make the grid apparent......they were a quick idea and not well executed, and theyve actually been removed since this mockup was made

I keep redoing the characters outline, but its gotten to a point where if i make it any lighter it will look strange on a dark background, but yeah its lighter now (thanks to GigaGuy and his many echos), im just too lazy to replace this screen

Atooi (Level 5 Soldier) at 1/24/2006 7:12:32 AM
The HUD is great too, btw.

Atooi (Level 5 Soldier) at 1/24/2006 7:11:44 AM
Awesome looking. Great job!

Faceless (Level 1 Depressed) at 1/24/2006 6:38:45 AM
Well rather thank break any pattern, the 4 circles in the dirt path make us pick out the randomly placed pattern that they're tiled in.
The grass seems too similar to Sword of Mana's only inferior in many ways.
Also, have you borrowed Sword of Mana's palette? Should it ever become a product, I think you would want to avoid taking colours from another game, unless done very discretely (which this wasn't).

The rest of it I like, aside from the foot stance of the lead char.
The overhanging red/orange plant in particular appeals to me.

Ducrey (Level 1 Thug) at 1/24/2006 4:04:56 AM
Looking great! This is a game I would love to play just from the way the scene comveys a general sense of the world where it takes place. Also, it sounds like it has a lot of potential gameplay-wise, I love these types of games and I hope you get around to making it. =)

reydragk (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/24/2006 2:15:39 AM
I think it looks good with an outline, but maybe go with something a little lighter than the blackish shade

lunarknight (Level 2 Quiet One) at 1/22/2006 6:40:33 PM
I agree with GigaGuy about the dark outlines for the character. It makes it stick out too much and makes it look a little odd. But wow... the tiles are amazing.

+5 and a favourite.

Nomade (Level 3 Private Eye) at 1/22/2006 3:28:20 PM
Amazing! I love the colors.. the scenerys.. everything.. 5 dots +fav =DDD

Lawrence (Level 10 Operative) at 1/22/2006 12:26:40 PM
I love it Adarius. The colours are great. It's so crisp and clean.

rezoner (Level 1 Rookie) at 1/22/2006 6:25:11 AM
I'd like to play an MMORPG with gfx like this ^^"... fav,

GigaGuy (Level 1 White Belt) at 1/22/2006 1:51:07 AM
I have to say, the tile work on this is amazing... sorta reminds me of SoM tiles, with a more colourful look. This mock-up really looks like its from a GBA rpg. Only problem is the main character's black outline. It makes the character stand out too much when put on the tiles. Otherwise, excellent work!

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 1/21/2006 6:57:53 PM
It looks great. The colors may be tooooo intense in real gameplay.

happip (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 1/21/2006 6:19:47 PM
great job on this o.o you used a different palette- more colorful than the one in your older sprites- and I like it a lot : D
