Good composition here and I quite like the palette you've chosen. Too bad there's not much of a preview on Amazon, but I wish you luck with your book.
My main criticism is the black field seperating the sand dunes in front from the mountains in the horizon. I can't quite make out what it's supposed to be. I guess it's supposed to be rock, emerging from the sand. But its lack of highlights and shapes, combined with its very smooth lines make it read more like a liquid, like black oil or goo. Given the light source, I can't quite wrap my head around the shadows in the foreground. If it was intended as a bit abstract, that would be cool. But then the mountain range in the distance seems too realistic by comparison.
The Amazon preview isn't much, but if in the description it says that if you go to this link you can download the whole first two chapters, as well as the Challenges appendix! http://www.logbook-project.com/p/learning-pixel-art.html
Good points. The very dark field is largely more abstract outline/edge shadow between the foreground/background layers. Now that you've pointed it out, I agree it's a bit confusing; thematically it's a bit odd, especially given the lack of similar outlines on the rest of the piece, and it doesn't really obey the light source. The foreground shadows are a little abstract, but do generally follow the distant central light source, with the exact shapes intended to communicate the wavy, uneven ground of the sand dunes.
Thanks everyone!
