John Warner is a jerk

News Details

I don't think this story needs much more than a quote:

Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder."

Read more about it here...  Hey Canada, still have any vacancy?

actually, i see this as a way of finally tackling an issue that has dogged America since it's creation, where the federal government at first came second to the state.  nationalizing the guard gives the executive branch one of the powers it was supposed to have from the beginning - enforce the will of the federal government.  The problem is not the new rules, imo, but that fact that we cannot trust the current leadership to use them responsibly.  the solution is to elect someone who wont abuse their own authority; and the people still have control over this whether they choose to exercise that control or not (see randomblink's pep talk)

You gotta love our insane-leadership... Just when you didn't think it could get any more crazy? Captain Cuckoo goes above and beyond for ALL OF US! Yahoo! The problem isn't our government tho "People of the United States"... The problem is those morons who voted his ass President in the FIRST election AND those who DIDN'T stand up when he bought the second one... Hell, our founding fathers said that we should rise up and overthrow our government and start from scratch every five years... Hell, Captain Cuckoo is on his second damn term... sheesh!

For those of you old enough...? VOTE! For those you who AREN'T old enough? TELL YOUR PARENTS TO VOTE!

I used to think I was doing my civic duty by NOT voting... YEARS AGO! But I have since matured. It actually DOES matter... VOTE VOTE VOTE...

PEACE!

Everyday, the stuff I hear in the news makes me glad I'm not an American. I was just reading an article the other day about a court case in MD, and wel, the jist of it is that in MD, by law, once you say yes to sex and the act begins, you have no legal right to say no. No doesn't mean no anymore. Pretty horrific, being a woman who once lived in MD. :(

did you actually READ that?  the big deal is that anytime the president feels like it, he can declare martial law without any authorization.

whatever happened to the government that the founding fathers fought for?  you know, where the people rule instead of some one man controls all...  isnt that why we fought against in the revolution?

"state-based National Guard is part of the government, so whats the big deal?"
It's part of state government, not national government. Now the president can take people from any state's National Guard and station them wherever he wants in America. This wouldn't be all that suspicious if it said something like "to better deal with natural disaster", like Katrina, but instead it says to "suppress public disorder".

Lately the executive branch is starting to get a bit too much power for my liking.

Wow...seems like he's crafting a nice Orwellian world south of the border.  He's already got the people worried about foreign wars and the "others" among them who could do them harm.  Now he's quietly removing the restrictions on his own actions within the country.  Next up, I forsee mandatory daily calisthenics!

I've got a couple of spare bedrooms, if anyone wants to seek refuge.  I've got a few gripes with our own political leaders, but they've done nothing anywhere near this sinister...yet.

Hehe! This is just the beginning stages of an elaborate scheme, like installing more failsafes in case people aren’t as dumb as the government generally estimates they are. You'll see - once the election comes, there will be a "terrorist attack" and martial law will be declared, postponing the election indefinitely. And if people see through it and attempt to voice their opinion, they will be detained and silenced without much of a splash, because, you see, there was a law put recently in place that allows government to detain and punish anyone they see as a threat without any kind of trial. If more people see through the roués, the above law will go in effect! Awesome! We live in the V universe!

The deal is that bush can now forcefully use the national guard against citizens without consent of anyone. I'm not saying that one person having all power is definitively a bad thing *cough hitler cough*  but we've, or at least i've noticed, not gonna speak for ''all of us'' that bush doesnt mind a bit of force here and there
