Help leel earn an art scholarship!

News Details

If you haven't been in the pool or haven't seen the unpixely thread, then you don't know that leel is trying to earn a scholarship. All you gotta do is click on the link and vote. Simple as that.

Normally I wouldn't be interested with such things, but it's for educational purposes.

Vote here!

(Also thanks should go to Metaru for coming up with the idea.)

I voted! It's a nice artwork...

warhie (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/24/2008 8:38:55 AM
I don't know leel but she seems like a nice person so i went to a i-net cafe and voted from like 20 PCs :o)

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/13/2008 9:59:36 PM
Sorry, i misread.  I thought it was like reality tv, where the judges get one vote and the people get another and both are voting for the most talented.  That's what i get for skimming.

so yeah, if you can get cash for being internet famous, sweet deal.  it's a shame the image can't be updated.  We all pay bills, most of us go/went to college...it's expensive.  My dean's scholarship doubled this semester just in time for me to find an apartment....and give it all to someone else :P.

I do feel administration and prominent members promoting rulebreaking/fraud is still a small stain on the community., but that has nothing to do with you, leel.  I didn't mean to imply that you begged any dishonest approach.

Mille (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 6/9/2008 5:33:58 AM
Posted it on a stupid french forum with lots of people on it but dunno if it would help.
I think that this system is totally stupid, they may give the first price to some fat geek with lots of pals on the net but no drawing skills.

Indigo (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 6/8/2008 8:26:23 PM
i truly feel you guys are misinterpreting what I was saying.  I never accused anything being non-ethical.  (besides maybe rule breakage)  I only said the "most ethical" choice in my mind would be my suggestion.  I recognize that it is in fact a popularity contest by nature (as mentioned a few times before) and I certainly understand leel's point of view about the money.  I gave simply my personal opinion and made it clear thats what it was.  I even expressed my opinion about this to her when she first entered.  You seem to be the one creating more drama here...the CAPS aren't necessary...please.  But I will say no more.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/8/2008 7:03:32 PM
OMG NON-ETHIC?! please. Leave that stuff away from this, no need to take this that seriously. In any case, if anyone feels this to be dishonest, just vote for the piece you believe that deserves your vote, and thats all. no need for the drama.

if the place wanted ethics and moral for the contest it wouldn't be an 'Open internet voting contest', and instead it would be an judge-only decision. why? because WE KNOW and THEY KNOW that such thing can be EASILY tricked. it takes two seconds to realise that the idea behind this system is not only to vote for  your favorite entry,  but also  to promote the site itself among other internauts.

I do believe  that the comunity spirit here goes beyond than a simple 'comment and critique' of pixel art.

please.

From what I understand this is in fact supposed to be a popularity contest. Thus, I vote.

Best of luck to you leel.

greenraven (Level 8 Cannibal) at 6/8/2008 6:18:52 PM
Which is why we're doing it. Most of us only wish we got a scholarship this easily, so we're living our dreams by proxy through you.

Also why did you change your name?

edit:

You slipped back to #11. :O

leel (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/8/2008 5:51:28 PM
Well it's totally fine that you feel that way, but with a $40,000 a year bill (just for housing and tuition) the fact that you think this contest is shallow is really not my greatest concern.  I hope that's understandable.

Indigo (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 6/8/2008 5:25:05 PM
I recognize that this is in fact a popularity contest (as I stated in my first post) - however, I'm personally against such a thing and find it to be quite a shallow event.  I can only give my suggestion as I did before, as that sounds to be most ethical in my mind, despite what the intent of the contest is.

However, those of you who are suggesting ways to vote multiple times in one day is clearly against the rules.  Keep that in mind.

greenraven (Level 8 Cannibal) at 6/8/2008 4:12:27 PM
leel's #10, huzzah!

Also, when, how and why did you change your name? O_O

Gil (Level 4 Lieutenant) at 6/8/2008 1:16:59 PM
Indigo and Adarias: The contest itself was stated to be viral and that the participants are encouraged to ask friends to vote and even link the page directly. That is just the nature of the contest. Nowhere does it say: "ask your friends to vote for their favourite piece".  There will be a skill vote, but that one is done by the site itself, as it should be.

That said, it's required you all vote every day, as leel is kickass and deserves this as much as anyone... Extra points are earned by reviewing too, so make sure everyone has a review there too!

Mille (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 6/8/2008 10:51:51 AM
XD Seems that you can vote several times after deleting your cookies (on firefox at least)
EDIT: er, actually not.

leel (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/7/2008 3:25:23 PM
Actually it is a popularity contest.  There are two awards given out, one that the people who run the site pick as the best piece, and another that is "most viral".   On the site it even says that sharing the entries with your friends is "the best way to increase your rank"

No one ever said it was based on actual skill or talent.  There's pieces that would blow me out of the water, but they're stuck back at #5000 and up.  Then again there's pieces that are just terrible that are way above my piece.

And I totally agree about the editing - I was really rushed when I entered this because I thought the contest ended in May, and to top that off I submitted the wrong size (the huge file shows all the screw-ups XD)  but it won't let me edit the file anymore, so I'm stuck with the darkness and gray.

I'm not encouraging people to trick the system.  If they want to use proxies or whatever to vote a million times - well thank you for your dedication!  But all I'm asking for is a vote a day.  The website WANTS people to visit the site, so voting daily is not cheating in any way.

And I'm not trying to use my 'popularity' to force people into uninformed decisions. If they don't like it, don't think I should win, that's fine, I won't hold a grudge, I'll just ask someone else.

Now that all the explanations are over, I just wanna thank everyone who voted!  I really appreciate the support - I moved up from #33 to #14 in just two days!   You're all very awesome for doing that!

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/7/2008 2:43:15 PM
is it  a popularity contest?  like high school superlatives?  or is it a real competition based on the skill demonstrated and the quality of the execution?

I like leel.  I like the work.  i like this piece.

BUT

this thread seems to be put together in a way that supports uninformed decisions, or those based on personality more than art, trying to rig the system (multiple votes? linking to the piece instead of the competition?), and just general dishonesty.

I support Indigo's sentiment and I think that suggestions made by the moderation here are shameful.

Nate out.

PS to leel - if the scan was better you'ld have far less competition.  That's what photoshop and other programs are for - not retouching to make your work look better, but retouching to make it look more like itself.  The gray is deadening.

Skull (Level 11 CEO) at 6/7/2008 1:26:09 PM
I think actually earning scholarships like this is rather crazy - I mean, there's a load of really crap stuff in there, with a lot of votes!

Souly (Level 4 Murderer) at 6/7/2008 12:42:00 PM
Don't forget to vote in both Firefox AND internet explorer.
It allows for double votes per day.

It's funny, there are only two pieces of art I would even considering voting for.
I see blown glass there, what the fuck how do you put that up against paintings and drawings?

Vertigo-Zero (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/7/2008 12:06:03 PM
I've voted 3 times already XD

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 6/7/2008 10:23:09 AM

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/6/2008 10:06:01 AM
EXACTLY. thats why we should help her as much as we can. its the least thing we could do.

greenraven (Level 8 Cannibal) at 6/6/2008 7:34:02 AM
Huzzah! I'm being helpful.

Good luck leel.

Also, according to the viral map, there's 270 views (votes?) from PixelJoint. Woot!

schrumpfkopf (Level 1 Depressed) at 6/6/2008 5:58:35 AM
Indigo made an excellent point here - nonetheless very nice piece by leel - and there is doubtless a small community-bonus that applies (wtf is a community for if not support?) ;--)

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 6/6/2008 1:40:38 AM
keep voting gus, we can do it.

Skull (Level 11 CEO) at 6/6/2008 12:47:24 AM
..I now expect Leel to come to my house and cook me a meal because of this..

leel (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 6/5/2008 6:46:30 PM
Wow thank you so much Greenie and Met!   I've moved up  7  11 places since you posted this!

Monkey 'o Doom (Level 11 Psychopath) at 6/5/2008 4:22:10 PM

Yeah, everyone vote as often as possible. E-mailing to yourself also gives big points.

Indigo (Level 2 Flatfoot) at 6/5/2008 3:56:22 PM
popularity contests for scholarships have become more and more ... well... popular these days.  In either case, I believe a person should receive a scholarship who is deserving.

I'm not saying that leel is not deserving, but I encourage you all to vote for who's you think is best/most qualified rather than purely relying on the nature of our community's friendship-base

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 6/5/2008 3:43:31 PM
Where is the 'implant' button

Larwick (Level 8 Shodan) at 6/5/2008 3:42:33 PM
Lmao something about this seems wrong.

Reo (Level 11 Sensei) at 6/5/2008 3:26:07 PM
I always vote 3-6 times a day!

dumbo (Level 10 Master Sniper) at 6/5/2008 3:21:53 PM
I already feel forgotten by leel.

But I voted non-the-less...
