Strangely, I actually switched back to the ascii graphic set after learning how to visualise the game with a graphics pack. It ws my first time playing an ascii game so I was a little confused the first time around.

I'm not sure if you would have all the interesting let's play stories(boatmurdered, etc.) if this was a purty, highly rendered game.

It's not bad, although there's not much to look at when you zoom in. It's not very refined on the pixel level. But, overall, I like it. I think the backgrounds are the most interesting to me. I'm gonna print screen and make some local copies so I can look at them in finer detail. I'm very impressed with how they integrated the pixels with more painterly stuff. I think it's the most successful integration of the two I've seen yet. There's a lot to be learned here for people interested in that sort of thing. The animations are disappointing, though. I'm even noticing a drop in quality with the more recent animations.

Ah, ok. If you're curious, Ptoing made a nice post on the c64 palette and how to use the ramps in this thread.

I think you're missing some of the features that make him a scout. I didn't even realise I was looking at a TF2 scout until I saw the description. I did a quick google seartch and the TF2 model has less baggy shorts and a tucked in shirt with a belt visible.

One more thing, is that really the c64 palette? Where'd all the greys go?

Site's not bad. I think I'll wait a couple months to see what they do with the place. The dim the lights options shows they know the busy layout is a problem when viewing the art. It seems like they'll really need to overhaul the site theme for the art section if they're serious about it.  Just about every art site I know has a neutral background and minimal junk bordering around the art.

Really nice, although this reminds me of Street Fighter 3 Alpha than KOF. Also, I almost hate to mention, but I think the masculine legs complaint isn't really because of the legs, but because of the narrow hips compared to the shoulders.

I was looking at a firefox extension called stylish and it seems like it can edit the usercontent.css for individual websites. Maybe a firefox addon could be created that adds an option under the Tools menu to apply pixel art filtering to the current website or all sites.

Never heard of Tiepolo before. Gonna check him out now. Thanks for bringing him up. He had a unique way of handling drapery.

I really need to grab a book on renaissance symbology so I can go deeper into these renaissance pieces. I think I can figure out some of this. The dragon looks like it's actually a serpent carrying an apple from the tree of knowledge. Maybe that's why that angel to the right is sweeping across towards it. Trying to protect the immaculate conception. I've heard that golden apples also represented Elysium, though

You must've learned a ton trying to work the original into pixels. I have trouble enough trying to get a skull down on paper with the same proportions and line angles, but your copy(I mean that in the master copy sense and not this trace nonsense some people won't stop going on about) is incredibly close to the original. It's really easy to just say good enough and move on, but it's obvious you took your time to get it as right as you could.

Its interesting to see how you handled the different kinds of edges, too. Edges are definitely tricky to convey in pixel art. You can't really create lost edges. Pixels are just too precise to work like that. And you'd think you could create soft edges with several shades of AA, but often that'll just end up coming across as banding. I've always thought that banding gave a piece a weird out of focus effect, too. Definitely not a soft edge.

If I remember right, this is from a while ago during your low sat and contrast experiments. Do you still experiment with the colour like that?

You really ought to change the title. A tad misleading since we still have to wait an indeterminate amount of time before we actually get nearest neightbour filtering.

Also, I take it that this provides an individual user the ability to apply nearest neighbour filtering to all images by editing the usercontent.css file?

Very nice. The style was nailed and I like the little subtle updates and details you gave MM and Z.  This feels like the sequel to MMX3 from an alternate timeline where cone feet were never invented. 6stars, but I wouldn't mind seeing the contrast on the background stuff in the Z screen brought down a tad.

Maybe it could be an everybody thing. Y'know, some day.

So this is only for a competition :( I was hoping we'd get to see a couple more screens. :'(

Awesome! This is just the kind of graphical style I was envisioning for a game idea I had.  Mostly blank foreground, but richly detailed background in a sidescroller perspective. Faved and saved to my computer for reference.  Nice panties, too. There appears to have been some shrinkage during the cryo-sleep process

ack. I always thought Adam made this. Really nice piece. Love the colours and style. I'm a little depressed how close I was to screaming stealer. It makes me sad to think I was giving the wrong person credit, even if it was only in my head.

Sweet! Redesigns are always fun. Are you going to try for a more neutral theme this time around? Also, I hope you are able to fix the firefox issues that cause images to disappear behind parts of the page when you click the zoom button, instead of exanding the page aroudn the image. I also preferred it when you guys had it set up so that when you clicked on a gallery piece it opened up the picture by itself in a new window. But I use imagezoom for viewing this site, so I might not be the typical viewer who needs the site's zoom to see the pixel art.

I like your 3 main focus points for the new redesign. Sounds like some good thigns to concentate on. #2, esepecially. I find it kind of annoying that the same pixel art tends to keep showign up on the left side fo the homepage. It'd be nice to see more people being recognised there.

Thanks for all the hardwork, sedge+team!

I like the simplisity, DE. The desat is definitely a good look, but I'm a little disappointed that you decided on outlines. It'd be very interesting to see this without or with more minimal outlines. Was equilibrium hte one with Christian Bale and the book burners?

Great stuff. Really feel like I would be able to recognise you if I saw you in a mall or something. My only suggestion would be that hte AA is a bit lacking on the right side(our right) of hsi face.

The one thing I don't like about this is teh camera panning back and forth so much. It kinda makes me nauseous because of how quickly it has to move.  As soon as the first pokemon are thrown into the ring for the first time, I think it'd be better if pokemon recalls and substitute were handled only by the text messages with a small hint of hte recall animation. And that way the camera was kept focused on the ring area.

Good points Adarias. Many of his points could really use some further pondering. He wonders if serious artists give pixel art any attention. How do you define a serious artist? Is Arne, a well-respected and accomplished artist over at conceptart.org a serious artist? I've seen pixel art be well received at many of what I would call serious art boards. Does the fact that the wikipedia definition of pixel art doesn't have some textbook or website cited source really mean anything?

The argument about double the resolution=better is also pretty boring. To me it it's the kind of argument you find among people who think that  everythiing should have at least 5x more bloom and think games where every single texture looks bump mapped metallic are pretty. Increasing resolution can lead to a prettier game, but not because having more graphic information automatically makes it better

And why didn't anyone mention cave story was getting double-sized? How do people feel about the new sprites? I'm a little disappointed at the moment. If he's gonna double-size the sprites, then the space should be used to add in more information and colours. The redone background is coming off as a bit plain now/ I hope he fixes up the repetitive tiling while he's at it

Nice, I could really see this fitting in with a factory setting in paper mario. Good job on hitting the style. I really enjoyed PM:TTYD. A very fresh RPG that impressed me with how it broke/disguised up the typical crawl dungeon, fight boss RPG formula.

Thanks for all the comments. Made me happy to see this in the top 4 of the weekly showcase for a couple days.

Darien: towards the end of this I really wanted to start combining the harvest moon mechanics with a post apocalyptic setting(Fallout Moon?). I've got some telephone poles and half buried cars and tires to go along with the shack. Adding all this stuff made me realise the cutesy style wasn't going to cut it so I ditched this version. No progress on my latest idea while I forget about digital and work on my drawings skills
