Hehe. For some reason, this reminds me of the part in the opening cinema of MUSHA/Aleste on the Genesis where the Captain and the rest of the mech squadron get blown away by the enemy firepower.

there no actual animation, all you've done is move the same picture about a bit and change colors...
how about animating his face or something.
