It.. is... DONE!

A bit larger piece than my last few...
I decided to test the new grafx2, and this is what came out in the end. Seems that the program is pretty nice :D Check it out at http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/

Took me a while to finish it. I'm not used to 16 colors per spread anymore. Think I'll stick to 8 to 10 in the future. Enjoy.

edit: Significantly improved the palette, and fixed some tiny bits as well. Thanks to everyone who helped.
You can check the old version here

edit: Changed the palette a bit further, thanks to everyone at Pixelation who helped. Also cleaned up some bits and made some invisible changes as well. Old version is at http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8907/rocklobster43sl7.gif

[the new colours look great btw]

YOYOGiGi (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/18/2009 5:21:38 PM
Good Work ! ;)

Haserhud (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/15/2009 8:21:24 PM
I can't believe this is 16 colors! AMAZING.

yrizoud (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/13/2009 8:01:43 AM
Ahh, good color change. The new color no longer clash, and although it was formerly a blue, the result doesn't look "warmer" so it doesn't change the mood.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 2/10/2009 9:33:58 AM
Nice cleanups. Now on to new horizons!

zi-double (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 2/9/2009 5:25:28 AM
impressive and like idea and like execution. I like update also I like very much planet and peoples there :)

006 (Level 2 Corporal) at 2/7/2009 3:33:05 PM
In 16 colours this is awesome! I love the metal effect.

d-p (Level 10 Maniac) at 2/7/2009 1:38:58 PM
Wonderful metal effect.

Fuzion_Creative (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/6/2009 3:41:13 PM
16 colors...amazing!

blueleds (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/5/2009 8:26:06 PM
Immediately fav'd. Simply amazing.

lap1994 (Level 2 Hired Gun) at 2/5/2009 6:56:12 PM
Oh noes! THESE FLAT MAN ARE GON B SMASHED!!

exocet (Level 5 Captain) at 2/5/2009 3:14:09 PM
Ilkke, this looks amazing! The shading of the planet is a true work of love :)
So much detail on the robot, but still legible at first sight. And you could even afford a more futile use of the last colour, it's been a while I hadn't checked that kind of thing :)

I like the new colours better, more contrast between the robot and the planet.

Tyvon (Level 1 Private) at 2/5/2009 7:10:55 AM
This is amazing. ;_;

Panda (Level 3 Stalker) at 2/5/2009 5:33:13 AM
Uhm, while the planet looks better now, the robot was so much better before the update (IMO).
Now it has color and AA issues here and there, and looks blurrier.

Oh also, one thing that has been bothering me since the beginning, but you should fix the shape of the eye on the right!
Looks deformed compared to the other one.

Other than that, pretty nice.

pixel_bath (Level 1 Intern) at 2/5/2009 3:17:10 AM

simply its WOW !!!!

Badassbill (Level 9 Necrophiliac) at 2/5/2009 2:51:56 AM
New palette is epic.

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/5/2009 1:29:24 AM
@skyrwy87 and others: This here is a thread on pixelation for playing with/discussing the colors. Please feel free to  join in.
The whole trick is that robot and planet have ONE color that is not shared. On planet it's the most saturated orange/brown, and on the robot that one is a gray. It is true that big hue shifts make the piece less smooth than before, but I think the illusion of having more colors is worth it :D

ui_ (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/5/2009 12:55:01 AM
jah!!! delicious!... i don't know why some ppl hate the colors! :( i love it!... but it really depend of each ppl point of view. Man you should try to print some of your pixels and sell them! :D your a great artist and nice guy with ppl and critics:P. keep theses nasty pixels on! :DDDD.... I WANT MOAARR! XD

Skurwy87 (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 2/4/2009 8:18:54 PM
Hmm, I'd suggest adding some more tints to the robot, or replacing the lightest blue with something warmer (right now, even as for a metal thing, it's too cold), like e.g. light yellow/orange, and seeing what happens.  Or even switching to the previous tone.  When it comes to the robot, the previous one was better; to the planet -- this one is better.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 2/4/2009 7:08:02 PM
Aaaaaahhhh...nice work man! That tint on the moon works nicely:)

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 2/4/2009 6:30:24 PM
much better!  reko sam ti =)

first i was thinking HEY! my monitor at home is much better that 24' DELL on Work!
and then i see! palete corection tjahhh.>  =)

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 2/4/2009 4:54:38 PM
tomic: I don't think the planet is supposed to look like sliced blutwurst. There is one lying on the planet, as I guess you can see.

Dusty (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/4/2009 4:42:20 PM
I don't think I like the new colors :(
Specifically the red tint of the planet. And also because it seems to lack the smoothness it had before.

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/4/2009 2:41:38 PM
@ui: I'm working on the colors as we speak ;D
edit: colors updated!

yrizoud (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/4/2009 2:03:07 PM
All together: "Always look on the bright side of life..*whistle* *whistle*"

tomic (Level 11 CEO) at 2/4/2009 1:33:52 PM

@bigbrother+all: what ilkke didn't want to say, cause it's a bit embarrasing: that unused color is an old demoscene superstition/ritual: an oblation to a higher power, the scene spirit =)

.. and i don't think, that the planet looks like a sliced blutwurst.

ui_ (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/4/2009 12:13:51 PM
iLKke, inspiring as always!... you monster!!!..... and ye!... that grafx2 pretty nice app :X...and the most important... FREE!! XD... just a suggest... maybe you should try with different colors, i mean, like something on "red" or "blue", i know that colors you have actually are kind of darkness purple/red but i mean more bright... that is for make the art ever more interesting by adding just 1 or 2 "solid" colors, but it just my crappy suggest, dont take me to serious! :D.... thx for this amazing art...

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/4/2009 11:35:30 AM
@big brother: Yeh I actually pondered the breaking of monochrome look quite a bit. The pic is actually in 15 colors, cause I've kept one for an accent of sorts. I thought of perhaps using it as a skin tone for the little people but it turned out to be unnecessary. In the end I left it unused (akhem ;)
Also tried to make the impression that the robot and planet don't share the same colors, seeing how planet is all in darker colors where you can see the tinting, and the robot is so contrasted that it looks almost completely gray. I even tried changing one of the brighter grays into a reddish tone and got the effect of peeled paint, but then I thought maybe I'm just doing these things cause I got bored of looking at the pic while I was pixeling it and then I got all excited to submit it ASAP and left it this way. I think it has a bit of a vintage look like this, which goes nice with the clockwork bit.
I'll try a couple of things, including the blue eyes, but I only have one color to spare so it'll be tough :D
Perhaps I should start a topic over at Pixelation to see what can be done.

big brother (Level 9 Rear Admiral) at 2/4/2009 11:03:24 AM
I was talking about this piece with my little bro, who also likes art. He suggested adding a color accent. I was thinking maybe make the inner ring in the eyes light blue or something. The contrast is enough to carry the focal piece alone, though. Maybe it's worth an experiment.

The texturing on the planet is delicious.

A big robot like that would undoubtedly make a lot of noise moving on such a small planet.

Mathias (Level 2 Kukyu) at 2/4/2009 8:49:13 AM

That is some stellar metal texturing/modeling, nice ramp. I love the planet's dry dirt texture and lighting.

Neat glimpse of another world.

fawful (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 2/4/2009 8:37:12 AM

That sir is fucking amazing.

You've just re-kindled me interst in pixel art good sir.And that is heading stright to my favorites.

volcom (Level 1 Depressed) at 2/4/2009 7:37:24 AM
nice, amazing that there are only 16 colors

motuwe (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/4/2009 6:58:24 AM
sweet iLKke, you take possession of my heart =))
bravo!!!!

Chapelier Toque (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/4/2009 6:22:06 AM
cat of gold-like
the little guy is a great touch for the scale-feeling. i dig shape bluffing on the robots, it's a nice way to add details to compensate the emptyness of the background.
your pieces are more and more awesome !

theGemini08 (Level 1 Depressed) at 2/4/2009 3:18:24 AM
I really like it! Cool!

Frost (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 2/4/2009 3:04:50 AM
Superb! I really like your style.

slasher (Level 1 Private) at 2/4/2009 2:01:46 AM

The texture's great! Maybe add a few stars in the background would be nice.

Overall, it's nice work! Fav-ed! :D

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/4/2009 1:58:46 AM
@Skurwy: I tend to sketch or write down ideas as I get them 'cause they tend to come at a time when I cannot develop them and they often get forgotten. I also use dreams or other people's work for inspiration, sometimes just for the atmosphere, etc. Sometimes I do on purpose things that I would 'never' do, just to surprise myself.
@dogmeat: contour fill is a freehand draw that when you let go of the mouse fills your 'contour' with drawing color. Imagine drawing a shape, then filling it with the paint bucket tool, but all in one. I just got used to it long ago and the nice guys who develop GraFX2 (thanks, yrizoud!) just implemented it into the program. It just saves you a bit of clicking.

Ashes (Level 1 Depressed) at 2/4/2009 12:04:08 AM
If you decide to sell Talent Potion with iLKkle essence in it, I'm buying it.
It's ... wow *speachless*

Skurwy87 (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 2/3/2009 10:32:08 PM
Hi there, Heathen! :)  Techniques aside, we all know you're good at it.  I wanted to ask you about something different.  The ideas.  I know it sounds like 12-year-old's speaking, but please explain me---for fuck's sake---where all those concepts come from?  You think those old eastern cartoons we all probably have been watching, have something to do with that? :) hehe  Man, you're just a robot, though a robot with heart -- technically, your pieces are painstakingly meticulous, yet you doesn't lose that good command of the aesthetic language -- when it comes to the reactions your works inspire, if you know what I'm saying.  Please don't stop.

SmallView (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 9:58:33 PM
Very fantastic pixels! I love the details and design.

Fool (Level 6 SWAT) at 2/3/2009 9:54:37 PM
Nice use for the extra shade of black=))

Broli (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/3/2009 7:23:01 PM
This is officially my favorite pixel of yours thus far. The robot has a great emotion on its face. This piece has great colors and great depth in it. AA on this piece is so smooth, perfectly executed. Nicely done.

edit: I just noticed the people on the planet. Nice touch with that. :$

big brother (Level 9 Rear Admiral) at 2/3/2009 3:49:41 PM
Where's the photo that you shrunk down and indexed? Oh wait, this isn't "photorealistic pixel-art"! Using fewer than 250 colors should've tipped me off. ;)

Love the claws, they look so dangerous.

Phrozen (Level 1 Intern) at 2/3/2009 3:02:51 PM
Lovin the planet's texture :D

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 2/3/2009 10:15:48 AM
Full marks from me! Definitely a wonderful and detailed pic:) Would have been nice to have a few specular highlights on the planet to meld in a little with the robot. I really enjoy the detail on his forearms.

SO...have you found your comfortability factor more in tune with less than 16 colours?

Nice work:))

Defyn (Level 1 Thug) at 2/3/2009 9:04:49 AM
WOW... Get this piece to the Hall Of Fame as fast as possible! :D

Exquisious (Level 1 Private) at 2/3/2009 8:38:29 AM
This is epic man. EPIC!

Pocket Clouds (Level 1 Gangster) at 2/3/2009 8:02:16 AM
This is absolutely FANTASTIC!! Incredible illustration man! You are phenomenal and full of patience!

hotnikkelz (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 7:40:56 AM
Holy fucking shit! Only 16 colours?

Antiboton (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 2/3/2009 6:40:38 AM

Oh shit! Another wonderful work for the weekly showcase. Congrats man!

Looks like digital art.

homosapien (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 4:31:47 AM
I love your textures. Huge fan of all your work.

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/3/2009 4:22:15 AM
@tomic: yeh, the robot is smoother than the planet. I got used to working in fewer colors so 16 seems too many and too smooth :P
@ptoing: you're welcome ;)

tomic (Level 11 CEO) at 2/3/2009 4:14:11 AM

the 'biggish picture'. beautiful. diggin the small details on the edward squissorhands robot, tough some parts feel a bit too smooth, but meh.

i'm starting to understand one's enthusiasm for contourfills in grafx2 =D

Lollige (Level 11 Psychopath) at 2/3/2009 3:47:40 AM
Awesome stuff, and no doubt its your style!

Haru-D (Level 1 Thug) at 2/3/2009 3:18:06 AM

Looks like a mix of Dragonplane and Cat of gold. Exelent work. FAV'D.

ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) at 2/3/2009 3:15:21 AM
Came out really nice :D Thanks for the Blutwurst!

Dusty (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 3:05:53 AM
Amazing rendering of the shadows. For some reason, I think I love the little people the most. I agree though, background would make a hell of a difference.

Alibak (Level 1 Depressed) at 2/3/2009 3:00:52 AM
cool

jamon (Level 8 Marshal) at 2/3/2009 2:55:35 AM
kaawwwaabungaaa!
planet is outstanding!
nice colors!

philipptr (Level 4 Team Leader) at 2/3/2009 2:32:34 AM
I'm loving every little detail of this. great work :)

diaryqueen (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 2:25:46 AM
holy crap O__o - respect for this one.

TomF (Level 1 Rookie) at 2/3/2009 2:22:47 AM
Bah, go away iLKke, your uber skills are putting us all to shame. Faved. :]

iLKke (Level 8 Cannibal) at 2/3/2009 1:54:17 AM
Thanks, peeps!

Now that someone's mentioned it, there ARE lighting inconsistencies, mainly because the robot was drawn first, with no real lightsource in mind. I love getting the dramatic effect of a single lightsource being very close and basically it looks as though I've used lots of little lights to light the robot. When I added the planet I had to try to make sense of the lights and shadows, but that wasn't really possible. Then again, the whole piece makes very little sense, so why would the lighting be sensible? :D
I made the pitch black bg on purpose. If I tried to add stars or stuff, it would make the pic more flashy, but would change the atmosphere.

Slemsvamp (Level 6 Serial Killer) at 2/3/2009 12:21:18 AM
How? Damn you're so good, damn

Vital (Level 6 Hitman) at 2/3/2009 12:08:59 AM
You know what? You are just sick. I hate You,buddy,I hate You!;P
Faved again

Jim16 (Level 3 Private Eye) at 2/2/2009 11:55:33 PM
I love the simpleness of the backing.
Also if he were to add stars, wouldn't that be like a second light source?
Guys this guy needs to be interviewed! Where the hell is Jal!

Solitaire (Level 1 Depressed) at 2/2/2009 11:42:14 PM
have my babies please

ohnoimnaked (Level 1 Jukyu) at 2/2/2009 11:24:18 PM
Your skill hurts my brain. Amazing. :]

Dex (Level 11 Psychopath) at 2/2/2009 11:17:55 PM
Oh just fuck it I give up

Jeez ilkke, this is great man. Just great. No stars, though? Who cares, I love it. I really need to chat with you sometime, damn. Fav'd.

Doppleganger (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 2/2/2009 10:58:27 PM
Awwwwwwwesooome!

That's too cool!

I feel like there are random parts of the guy that are too flat, but I can't really notice any serious lighting inconsistencies. Odinno if that can count as a legitimate critique, but I'm throwing it your way anyways.

The planet itself is shaded and textured extraordinarily well, and that is the main reason this bad boy is getting fav'd. The colors on the planet should be acknowledged too. The hue-shifting works quite well, and it's refreshing to see it shift into the reds as darks from the lighter blue-purples.

Great work in my opinion. I think if I worked hard enough, I could pick the piece apart a bit more, but I'm gonna let it alone.

skooba-dude (Level 8 Regional Boss) at 2/2/2009 10:24:20 PM
I'm just going to say, the shading is outstanding, as usual, although I didn't recognise this as yours at first glance-maybe because of the sheer smoothness, I dunno. I wanna see a galaxy background!woot!. Right now the background just stops me from faving it,(8/8)

CaKsTeR (Level 2 Quiet One) at 2/2/2009 9:24:22 PM
Insta-fave!

Awesome job, as usual

My only nit-pick is that the man on the bottom seems to need a bit more definition. Maybe it's just me. xD

Delfos (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 2/2/2009 8:52:01 PM
It's beautiful. But I'm not faving it. I don't know why.

Oh, man, i'm so bad.

Almost EVIL.
