Chimp Beats College Kids In Memory Games

News Details

Japanese researchers pitted college students against 5 year old chimps in computerized memory games.  The outcome may be linked to the theory that humans gave up much of this simple memory skill in order to develop complex language skills.

koch:
That reminds me of a story I read some time ago about a zoo keeper(well he mostly took care of some chimps) who got many appendages ripped off by his chimps when one day they decided that they didn't like him very much. I remember telling some friends(in college!!!!) that monkeys were quite stronger than mere humans, which they did not believe.

Adarias sums it up nicely.

A.B.:  That's great.  I think the headline would read "Chimp Rips Arm Off College Kid In Wrestling Match and Plays With Him While He Bleeds To Death".

A.B. (Level 8 Cannibal) at 12/6/2007 9:42:09 AM

I thought it was "Chimp Beats College Kids In Wrestling"!  Dunno why... :P

Anyways, this is interesting. MoD and Sedge is actually smarter than college kids!

It's funny how this made some people squirm in their seats.
To Crab:  They could memorize the pattern as a whole faster, not just do it faster, which has not much to do with reflexes.  And at some point it only showed the numbers so fast the humans couldn't even process it, just guess.
The headline was just a grabber, a chimp beating a college kid wasn't even the point of the article.  What I find particularly interesting is that an autistic person would have the ability to do it like the chimp or better and probably show about the same social awareness if not less.  Maybe autism is just a wrongly configured brain, or primitively configured.  So my point?  It may not be fact, but surely it has pushed the envelope, opened a few peoples eyes, and could help us understand ourselves better.

wow, anybody actually go and read the article. The quote
That challenges the belief of many people, including many scientists, that "humans are superior to chimpanzees in all cognitive functions," said researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa of Kyoto University.
Is sort of debunked in the article. Mainly because the scientist admits they still need to repeat the experimen with different sample groups. In one line, it says the monkeys were no more accurate than the hoomans, but FASTER, which isn't much of a surprise. In terms of reflexes, animals can kick our asses easily.

Seems like before they could even do a test like this, they would have to train the monkeys with the game. Whereas the volunteers would have much less time to practice.
Big advantage for those steenking apes, er, monkeys.

If the college kids are anything like the ones I know, then this is not surprising. Everyone knows college kids are at the bottom of their intellectyness curve. What with all the boozing and alcoholising, it's a miracle they showed up at the proper place and at the proper time. Let's see them try this with a more coherent and functioning social-group. then we'll show those monkeys who's boss.

ESA: Why are you so angry/defensive? Do you feel threatened by chimps?

ESA (Level 2 Dealer) at 12/5/2007 8:04:53 AM
This is not even interesting. Who gives a crap if a monkey  beat a human in something? I think this has been covered far too much by the news. I don't know why this is accepted into the news feed...

@Doomcreator: We do. We're just quiet about it; no overlord wants the small people to know what's really going on.

Well I can believe that. If chimps could speak and think as much as us, they'd dominate the world.

I wonder if a 5 year old chimp could protect itself with it's amazing memory powers from getting SHANKED IN THE FACE.
