TIGSource's Assemblee is a two-part game making competition: The first part (which is running now, through November 28th) is a call for artists and musicians to create assets: tiles, characters, UI elements, fonts, sound effects, whatever. These go into a large communal pool, which will be used freely, mix and match style by programmers and designers to make games, come the second part - all the art used for these games come out of that pool. You can submit whatever you like, so long as it's made for the competition.

This one is cheap, cool and easily created, even from your own art.

Hello there PJ community!

My name is Thomas and I'm a brand spankin new edition to this splendid site. As you may well have guessed, I'm a big fan of the ole' pixel art! My video game system of choice would have to be the NES and as such I'm a big fan of the really simple sprites and images. In this vein I have created, with the aid of my brother Daniel, a website that combines 2 of my loves in life! The art of Haiku and the art of the pixel.

The site is called Lo-Ku

Go! Underground (地底へドンドン!) is a short 2D platformer from Japanese game developer Dot Zo Games. The game puts you in the shoes of an archeologist searching for ancient artefacts in an underground cave complex. Only a few treasure chests are exposed from the start; the rest can be found by solving puzzles or performing certain actions. Thankfully, the treasure info screen (accessed with the A key by default) provides you with hints on how to find everything.
The signs you can read in-game explain the game's mechanics by means of icons, so you don't even have to know Japanese to understand what to do. Controls can be viewed and changed under the settings menu at the top of the window.

The game has charming pixel art graphics and nice music, and shouldn't take more than an hour to complete. To download, go here and click the yellow button. Please note that Windows is required, as well as a minimum display resolution of 1280x720.

GrafX2, a free, multi-platform bitmap image editor designed from the ground up for pixel artists, is having a birthday! This month marks its 13th year. To celebrate, and to build awareness for the project, the developers are asking the pixel community to create and submit art made with GrafX2.

So, the first thing what comes in mind when you hear sprite comic?

Crappy stories made with ripped megaman, sonic and mario sprites?  Yes, thats what I said too.

But here is a different one!
Pixel artist Neorice, who has also been making sprites for battle for Wesnoth and is working on the game Frogratto is since the end of november 2008 writing a webcomic!

Three different stories of three different heroes in the same world. Beautiful detailed double pixel sprites, on non pixel art backgrounds. At the moment there are 124 unique pages, and it is really worth the time to read them all!

Have a look at this webcomic!

As most of you would know, the same few artists have been dominating the Hall of Fame for a while now and we believe that this is unacceptable. Therefore we will be removing all of the artwork on the first page of the hall of fame within the next few days. This will hopefully level the playing field a bit and allow for other artists to get the recognition they deserve.

The artists to have their work removed are as follows:

Snake
Jaeden
Riva
Fool
lief
buloght
Morganne
neota
Helm
big brother
ryan-gfx
jalonso
ThereIsNoCure
-DE-
robotriot
Wayuki
Tremulant
Gas13

We apologise deeply to the artists who will have their work removed, we hope you understand our position. This was a very difficult decision for us to make. If you are one of the members listed above and feel as though you want to resubmit your artwork after the 'clean-up', then you may do so. But please do not all resubmit them at once, as it may cause the weekly showcase to get a bit clogged.

-Regards, the PJ administration.

 APRIL FOOLS PART 2!

Posted by skamocore at 4/1/2009 11:51:34 PM | 78 comments

This week you are challenged to create something using the controversial pillow shading technique.

Canvas Size- Exactly 400 x 100.
Colours - Unrestricted. Because pillow shading can often require a large number of colours, we recommend saving your work in the .png file format this week, as .gif can only handle 256 colours.
Transparency - No.
Animation - No.

If you are having trouble with this technique have a look at
this handy video tutorial.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

 APRIL FOOLS!

Yes, it is a bit early for an April Fools joke, but this is something that we thought would work better by pulling it off at the start of a challenge week.

Happy (almost) April Fools Day everyone! =)

Derek Yu has released a new game called "Spelunky". It's still in the beta stage, but perfectly playable and he's offered a download on his website.

According to his description:

"Spelunky is my latest game project, a hybrid of two genres of games that I enjoy - the roguelike and the platformer. The idea partly came from playing around with both genres separately. It was like I baked two different kinds of pies and then I stepped back and looked at them and finally just mashed them both together. Does it taste good? I leave that to the reader to decide."

Check it out.

I have gotten great news!
After a lot of comments about the Firefox 3 image filter, that blurs all our images when we zoom 'm, has finally been solved!
On 9 Jan this patch was made by

Anyway, go to the following page to see more about the discussion:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423756

As far as I understand, this patch needs to get reviewed by some guy named Joe, if he approves it it will get included in the next ff update.

From on that moment, you can switch the filter off by going to the config page:

Type about:config in your browsers address bar

Than search for the following string

gfx.images.smooth_scale

And most likely set it to False

I cant wait for the next ff update! Can you?

Check out this music video I did for this kid DJ I-dee. He combines turntablism and old school hip-hop techniques with video game samples and references. Needless to say, working on a video for songs like that was my cup of tea.

I KNOW it's hybrid PA/NPA mostly - but it's SNES inspired, so that makes it legit :D. I really hope the SNES fans here will enjoy it.

Make sure you check out his video for "The right" on his vimeo channel - it's a song built on a Final Fantasy sample.

The pixel art community at DeviantART is growing. In october a new dA pixel art club named Pixel-Pax was started by me (lollige), and is now being run by Metaru, Shonegold and I. More than 120 members, and active challenges and collaborations every day.

Not a member of DeviantART yet?

This might be a good reason to join, helping the pixel community to grow, getting ourselves known by other artists aswell! Submit your pixel works, join pixel-pax.deviantart.com and even more people can see your work now! Also you can immediately join the active Summer/Winter challenge, you might have seen a few entries of that in the PJ galleries.
At the same moment, the pixel art galleries on dA get cleaner every day thanks to the hard work of ShoneGold, the Gallery Director.
See you on dA!

Then skip right to 6mins and 30secs into the video.

"A married U.S. astronaut was accused on Tuesday of trying to kidnap and kill a rival for the affections of a male astronaut after she drove 950 miles

wearing adult diapers to confront the woman.

Nowak was initially arrested on attempted kidnapping charges on Monday in Orlando after assaulting Colleen Shipman, a U.S. Air Force captain, police said."

If you enjoy surfing the web in an effort to entertain yourself and others, this is an awesome tool. Basically you just go to the site, do a quick and simple sign up, and a toolbar is added to your browser. You get to choose from various categories you're interested in and with a simple click of the Stumble! button, you find yourself exploring the internet in a different way. Give it a thumbs up or down and it will create your personalized preferences to choose better pages to... um... stumble upon.

Those uncontested kings of pixel-based eye-candy, eBoy, have created an astoundingly beautiful new poster called FooBar, and it's an homage to all things webalicious. It's fun looking for your favorite Web brands (Boing Boing and Make are both in it!), and imagine the memories it will evoke when you look at it 20 years from now.

Banning an Austrailian staple food in the US has got to be one of the most bizarre bans ever.  I have an Austrailian friend living here in the US who puts the funky, salty spread on bread instead of peanut butter and I'm sure she'll be crushed by this.

As an avid amusement park enthusiast (Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Magic Mountain and Universal Studios are all a short drive for me) I was somewhat suprised by the data collected at London's Dana Centre on the thrill ride experience...

"We've actually been getting some interesting data -- it appears the subjects' heart rates are highest in anticipation of riding. It drops during the actual ride."

Makes sense I suppose, but I know my heart jumps looking down the track on Goliath's first drop. How about you guys?

What better to do with a mass of lego than recreate Michael Jackson's music video 'Thriller'.
A superb yet shakey video in minutes, which must have taken hours.
Ah, all the dead little lego pieces.

Chat with a random person! Just pick a language and wait until you get connected. Then, make some new friends or act like a complete fool.

This video of United States Senator Ted Kennedy speaking on Net Neutrality is a serious notice about the movement in the USA against possible actions planned by the main Netservers, which threaten to regulate a web traffic based on $$$. This is an "official" and serious position about it , not like the freak movement created in the Net (see my August notice "Fight for Free Net")

Google has found a way to have you help them make their image searching service better and have fun doing it.

You just pick a username (be sure to pick one, that way if you and another PJer get joined together, you can brag about how good you guys are, or find out how dumb someone can be ), then hit start...  It then searches for somebody else who is also waiting.  Once someone is found, the game begins...  You have 90 seconds to guess keywords for the image that your partner has guessed.  Each image is worth 100 points.

I have made it to 1300 points, can anyone do better?  (TIP: guess the obvious first...  If its a picture of some guy, then guess guy/man and so on)

What happens when you drop mentos into a 2-liter soda? Here you can find some examples of the insane reaction! And there is a contest too.

After over 40 years of sitting at the bottom of a swamp, a T-34 Soviet tank was found.  Divers located it 9 meters down.  The site is in Russian, but I think the pictures of the removal speak for themselves.

Ever want to watch a Bruce Lee-bot do some slow kung-fu moves? Or how about ride a coaster where you hear Bruce Lee grunt on every dip and loop? Well now, thanks to the Chinese, you can! Check the article for what could be a very interesting theme park.

You know all those lovely, large breasted figurines that come out of Japan with the disappointingly rock-hard plastic breasts? Well no longer! Sega has released a line of Neon Genesis Evangelion Moter Riders Figure prize toys with soft, squishy breasts.

Big brother ain't watchin' you but you can listen in on what kind of music some of the other PJers listen to. Introducing Last.FM, the "Social Music Revolution" where what you listen to gets scrobbled into various charts on your user page. By joining up with the Pixel Joint group, you can also find out what your buddies here also listen to as well as tuning in to Pixel Joint radio. Currently, with only 9 members, the group won't have a chart listing until we reach 15 members. So sign up today and start scrobbling (whatever that really means).

It was the summer of 1996 when Mike and Craig first drew The Homestar Runner on that fateful afternoon. Now, ten years later, Homestar is everyone's second favorite web-cartoon character! In honor of his 10th Birthday, a cartoon has been made along with a sale on everything with a homestar theme, not StrongBad, not Trogdor, but the one and only Homestar.

While PJ doesn't condone any criminal activity, we feel that you should be informed on the latest techniques in order to protect yourself from crime

This video provides you with information on how criminals can obtain a "bump keys" and how they utilize them. However, be aware that "bump keying" is completely useless against safes, so criminals have developed further techniques in order to break into them.

Together we can prevent crime!

Sure the RAZR looks hot...  Sure those smartphones are like having a computer built into your phone...  But EVERYONE has one now a days...

So what can you do to stand out in the crowd?  Make yourself a bananular phone of course.

Even badgers want one...

These guys set the world record for CPU overclock.

The system had a standard Intel Pentium 4 (3.06Ghz).  After a visit from our good ol friend liquid nitrogen, they got it overclocked to 5.25Ghz, and with a cool core temperature of -196°C (-320.8°F).

Weird Al is the master of parody and joke songs. With his talent he has been going strong since the early 80's. I can forsee another great album worth 'buying'.

Perhaps the most ingenius used for those VHS tapes ever. Another crazy, yet brilliant japanese video.
From what seems to be, television show BakuTen.

Lots of people feel inspired by movies and computer games, but instead of just pixeling Sakakibara Kikai simply build a real kind of mechwarrior thing. The machine looks nice and the neigbours will start to greet you for sure. Videos can be found on the product website.

This video of a monkey riding a dog will change your life forever.  And if that doesn't strike your fancy how about a Taco John ad featuring the duo.

Note: That monkey has been riding dogs for 15 freaking years and I'm just hearing about it now?!  How is that possible?

Pixel by using a computer is cool, but the idea of putting blocks on a raster is an old childgame! For 40 years a small company sells a game, which  is called ministeck. Check the company page www.ministeck.de  to get an idea of the purest way of pixeling or check the ministeck simulator to ministeck online.

Save up your pennies kiddies, King's Quest is coming to your local Target stores! That's right, an XP comatible version of the King's Quest series! So don't buy it on eBay for hundreds of dollars, just wait a little and you may have it for $20.

Ask a Ninja and Ninja gives answers! He even told you how to kill Ninjas and compare podcasts with apple pie!  If you don't have Quicktime there's always YouTube.

Ed note:  The ninja also has a terrific breakdown on Net Neutrality.

WWII propaganda is always good for a shock/laugh and this How to Spot a Jap leaflet is no different.  It's nice that they talk about the Chinese (C) and Japanese (J) as if they were draws at a carnival sideshow. Two bits a gander.

Citypixel is truly and literally an extension of the world we live in - just pixelated. There is advertising and hotels, public works and transportation, and art and interaction. You can use the payphones, for free, to look up a business or another pixelcitizen. You can shop and...well do whatever it is you do!

Thanks to someone asking someone on the forum what website they got their ideas from, I set out on a search. I found this, it pulls up some very odd inventions randomly...  Might be good if you want to pixel something very unusual...  Here are a few examples of what came up...

"It's a genetically-modified sheep that squirts clouds of black ink! It cuts through stone as if it were butter and dissolves in water."

"It's a rocket launcher! It has a human brain inside!"
