The roguelike Dwarf Fortress has been given a pixel make-over in the form of Stonesense, a third-party visualiser for the game which is currently in its third alpha release. Stonesense takes the original ASCII-based graphics and converts them into isometric visuals.

The open source mod is being developed by "Jonask" and "Solifuge" with graphics currently being created by members of the Dwarf Fortress community. Check out the official thread here.

Also, head over to TIGSource for more info, a screenshot and a video of Stonesense in action.

Heh, a few months ago I wanted to submit some news about SNK Playmore launching a site about the "Dot Art" in King of Fighters XII; no good since the site was in Japanese I'm afraid. But lo and behold, now it's in English!

SNK's artist are some of the most talented pixel pushers in the gaming industry when it comes to their games, so it's great to take a look at these awesome High Def sprites. Not only that, but when people browse the site, they can view some of the basic animations FRAME by FRAME.

I think it's neat personally. :P The site also has a nice little page devoted to "dot art" and the crazy process of creating the graphics for the game.

Newgrounds.com, a site that used to be only for flash movies/games and music, has now added an art section.

Users can submit up to 20 works of art, and then if an established artist likes your work, they will add it to the gallery. The gallery has 5 sections: Ilustration, Fine Art, 3D Art, Pixel Art, and Other.

You can also choose to allow people to use your art for their works, like games or movies. Really just another way to get your art seen, and by possibly different people. I know some of you already know about it, because I've seen some recognizable art there. They also have a very nice upload/crop system.

This awesome little tool created by DreamRunner lets you see how many colours your peice has and sorts them into a nice little PNG file.

http://2ddr.com/index.php?prime=sortpal Clicking on this link will take you to a page where you enter the URL for your image and then simply click sort and then just wait for the sorting to be sorted. Currently, it seems as though it only works correctly for .gif images.

The latest entry in the blog Games Aren't Numbers poses some questions regarding Pixel Art, including the ever interesting question of what defines Pixel Art and what's its place.

The Pixel Art gallery on deviantART has been without a moderator for a while, and now it seems something is finally being done about it!

http://moonbeam13.deviantart.com/journal/3350242/

It'd be amazing to see someone knowledgeable about pixel art in this position, to keep the gallery over there running smoothly and to encourage the community. Where better to start looking for that than here?

Note that you must be 18 years of age or older to qualify.

I know a lot of pixelation members browse over here at Pixel Joint, so i think it's a good idea to let you all know to hurry up with your secret santa submissions if you took part this year. You have very little time left! Make sure to get them to Panda (via PM over at Pixelation) as soon as you're done.

The deadline is the 23rd of December!

DO NOT SUBMIT THE PRESENT HERE AT PJ UNTIL AFTER CHRISTMAS.

Force Fighters' is a group of people which feels like a team who work together, to relax and have fun or to reach particular objectives. Force Fighters main interests include gaming, game development, modding, graphics, writing, music and creativity in general. Apart from games, various kinds of contests are held, often as part of bigger projects.

Not much pixelart but they do have online versions of Metal Slug 1 & 2

Recently they contacted us to feature pixelart to the Fighters and their mailing list.
Fool, zi-double, Gas13 and other PJ members are featured.

Hi everyone!

Just an update for those wondering why I have stopped cleaning the PixelArt Galleries at deviantART and why there are so many miscategorizations in the Gallery.

One of my main roles when I was appointed Gallery Director for PixelArt at dA was to  keep the PixelArt Galleries clear of Miscategorized work. It took me about three or fours hours a day to do most of the cleaning.  Early in July all the Gallery Directors were told to stop doing any moving or cleaning of the galleries as the IT department are working on an auto move system.  As I understand it, if there is a regular type of miscat and a report is put in by a member, then an auto move to the correct category will take place. Obviously there needs to be some special safeguards needed to be built in to avoid abuse of the system.

So anyone who would normally report miscats at dA please keep doing it, you are not being ignored but this sort of IT program will obvious take time to put into place.

I am sorry if dA is currently a depressing place to look for PixelArt but I keep an eye out for your work in the Galleries and would love to DD feature it. I am only permitted to give a DD feature to the same artist no more than once in a three month period.

I really need good PixelArt to feature so if you aren't at dA yet, please join us and maybe your work will be the next Daily Deviation Feature to be faved by hundreds and viewed by thousands.

I hold regular PixelArt competitions...always with prizes, so it is a good idea to put me on watch so you know when a competition is happening.

Hope to see you at deviantART.

Best

Ann

As some of you might have noticed, Pixelation and quite a few other sites are down atm. This is because there was an electrical gear shorted, causing an explosion and fire in the datacenter where the servers are. About 6000 servers are down because of this, Pix being on one of them. Noone was injured there, so that's good to know. And furthermore no servers seem to have been damaged. Everything should be back to normal sooner or later, but it probably still take a while until everything is back online.

SNOB WARNING: This news deals with iso pixelart.

Pixeldam has just gone live with V3 of the city project.
The city is real now with a coast and islands using a SimCity styled navigation map.
New tourist accounts now mean you don't have to make a block to be a member too.
Citizen communications and blog are also new.
The best part is the integration between Pixeldam and Pixelmoon.

Shonegold, as of July 3rd, is the new official gallery director of pixel art at DeviantArt. She wants to get pixel art back in the spotlights and build a strong Pixel art community on DA.
Read more information in her journal

Don't be afraid submitting your pixels to DA, I'm sure they are welcome!

Check out this video of  someone creating pixel art using only HTML tables. Could you possibly make it more complicated? Even MSPaint is more efficient.

This is just crazy.

Another artist started a kind of community collab. He offers an image and asks his page visitors to place one of the 197138 pixels. Kind of cool: The palette is limited to 16 colors. Whatever is going to grow there, it will probably take some time. Maybe it will develop faster if you help.

Looks like you can now physically pixel (and voxel) with PixelBlocks. They have a pretty decent range of colours, and as they are semi-transparent, obviously colour depth can be increased at certain angles.

Sulake Corporation, the company behind the massively popular multinational virtual hotel chain Habbo are testing an  avatar chat concept for mobile devices called "Mini Friday". At the moment the client is still under development and only available for a limited set of S60 Nokia mobiles. The idea is the same as in Habbo Hotels; create an account, personalize your little avatar and chat away.

A word of warning though, if the data transfer rates on your mobile contract are out of this world, you probably might want to stay away.

Those of you who ever used Mobiles Disco back in the day should feel right at home ;)

Go to www.tictacusa.com/entertainment.php -> 'tictac art' -> 'tictac art studio'

There is a nice little Flash app where you can 'pixel' with tictac mints.. you have 6 different colored mints plus an eraser tool.  If you get bored you can still play some breakout there.

Pixelnotes is comprised of a grid of post-it-note-like sheets with four layers of graduated grey tones mounted over a bright primary backing. The result is a constantly changing grided matrix as notes are written and removed revealing different layers. "Pixelated formations and shapes develop according to our patterns of use."

CGEmpire is a relatively new site (kinda like www.cgtalk.com) however it's very small, personal, still and very helpful in game//art/music making.

They are having their third contest. One can compete in either form of pixel art, 2D or 3D (all in one division):

Winter Wonderland

They have included sponsors and prizes. The competition was announced 6 Dec , and the deadline is 31 January 07.
