Exactly, except the problem is you'll need people with creativity and major skills in another aspect of game design to create an idea with an inferior program that will be able to draw users from the existing mmo field. Every ad nowadays is for some new free mmo, and they all look the same. We've already got a saturated mmo market, it's just a matter of a few more non-programmers being able to break through that with a creative idea. I definitely agree the tool will prove it's worth in a few cases, but it will be heavily outweighed by the number of 0 user mmos created with it.

I think it will basically have the same effect as game maker. GM has been successful because a select few games are ingenious enough to compete in bigger playing fields. GM itself gets a bad rap because of the ratio between good and bad games, but because a wide range of genres can be created with it some ideas are able to successfully be realized in light of other more powerful competitors. This mmo tool will most likely function the same way, except it will be just that much difficult to make a hit because you are confined to one genre that you must revolutionize, as opposed to the possibility of almost any genre to be revolutionized.

Yet we all know what happens with alll these zero users forums = sink in the bottom itself of the internet, while most popular are on top of the sea, beathing the fresh air thanks to dozens and dozens of active users.

 same will happen for MMOs, so mostly, we always tend to get or know only the best of the best,
(unless of course, we are part of one of those sunken forums...)

It'll basically be what invisionfree did for forums. Everyone will have an mmo and none of them will have users. :3

That's the big difference between an mmo and a regular game. MMOs thrive on a community, which means you need something to pull people in over other mmos. As soon as you make making a "should-be-difficult-to-make" game easy, then you mess up the whole system. People who shouldn't be making mmos will be able too, and then you'll have a bunch of deadweight mmos with no users except the creator and his few very considerate friends.


The good of what this offers though does work with Souly's plan. A tool that allows people who lack the knowledge to create a real mmo means that people who are strong in a different skill set (say art) but just don't have enough time to learn sufficient programming (to make a real mmo) can construct one. Most likely the people with the creative edge and the skills to back it up will use this tool to create mmos that would actually be desirable to play. Unfortunately the program will get a bad rap (like game maker often does) because the majority of users will be people with no skill set, thinking they can get away with not learning coding or anything else useful.

Old news again, but it's an awesome initiative that deserves attention. People saying to aspiring developers: "MMOs are only for big gaming companies" are simply wrong, and stuff like metaplace will rule the future, where every game will be multiplayer over the internet, even indie games. A lot of them will cater to multi user interactive experiences, or what we tend to call MMO these days.
